Breakdown my Chances!

Sorry if I'm doing this a bit off, it's my first thread and all. Anyways...

I'm currently a junior in high school looking at all the Ivies, primarily UPenn (Wharton) and Stanford. Safeties are Bentley, Northeastern, Boston University. My stats are as follows:

I wanted to know what my chances are to getting into these schools.

Objective:

Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): moved from 6 to 3/~400 this year
AP (place score in parenthesis):took APUSH and AP Stats tests as a junior, scores not out yet.
Senior Year Course Load: AP Psychology, AP Calc BC, AP English Lit, AP Physics, Highest level business class in my school, Independent Study Statistics Add-On

Im not sure if I should write about one of two things. one, my dad has serious mental health issues and has been very bad to my family, leading me to take an interest in that sort of field, or two, my obsession with nancy drew and how it allows me to escape...

Also Free free to PM me if you’d prefer!

Someone please help me out. Even if you could just make some recommendation on whether or not i should retake my sats,…? please?

No chances at ivies/equivalent schools.

You’re 100% at your safeties, though. For reaches where you will have a better chance, look at schools of equivalent difficulty of admission as CMU, ND, Berkeley, USC, etc or some LACs.

No chances at ivies? why do you say that? :(

oh also I have a black belt in Kung Fu and play competitive golf if that makes a difference. I keep forgetting things xP

I would definitely raise your SAT scores the next chance you get. Maybe take ACT in September and do Subject SATs in October so you have more leeway? Your class rank is impressive. I’m not sure but your EC’s kind of seem scattered. For private schools I think they generally prefer that your EC’s remain somewhat focused because they’re trying to build a class. I think for any public schools you have a decent shot but for Ivy’s you really need to either raise your stats, focus your EC’s, or write an essay that blows them away.

I don’t believe you have no shot at Ivy’s but I do believe it will be difficult for you to get in (not counting essay) For your safety’s I agree with above posters saying you have a great shot.

Good Luck!

Safeties you have great chances for.

Ivies are not likely. Your test scores are low for those schools and there is no focus to ECs. Piano thing is a bit strong, but still not strong or unique enough to set you apart completely.

And everyone says to write amazing essays and everyone always says they will write amazing essays, but chances are that people don’t. Adcoms say every year that only a certain amount of essay really “blow them away” each admissions cycle, so obviously not everyone who says theirs are spectacular is actually correct.

But like I said your chances for those other schools are great! You’d actually probably be an excellent fit for Boston University.

Your test scores will virtually make all the Ivies and Stanford very high reaches. Since you don’t seem to have very many schools in the middle for your stats profile, why not add some “tier 2” schools to your list? Examples might be Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Boston College, Tufts, and USC. There are also some great LAC’s to consider. Instead of concentrating only on reach schools with an admit rate of (roughly) 9 to 19%, I’d look at schools that have an admit rate in the 20 to 30% range, or thereabouts.

You guys have all been extremely helpful! I am going to definitely raise my sat subject tests in October because i hadn’t studied for my first sitting like an idiot xP. I was considering doing an early decision to Wharton, but we’ll see. Thanks again for your help though!

Oh and for my extracurriculars, I am treasurer of DECA, of NHS and of the school newspaper. I thought it would fit, especially because I want to do something business/finance.

Your class rank is impressive, and while your SATs are definitely strong in general, I’d raise them around 100 points if you want a shot at UPenn and Stanford. Your EC’s are standard, I respect your for your community service and awareness and that would definitely be something to focus on in your essays. Your SAT IIs are above average, not bad at all, but I’d recommend taking them again if you have the time/feel you can do better. Your safeties look good-- I’d say BU is a definite, Northwestern a strong maybe, and I don’t know enough about Bentely to judge.
As someone else suggested, try to think outside the Ivies. It’s good to aim high/top 20, but what about Duke, Northeastern (slightly lower rank, but a great school), Carnegie Mellon, Tufts, etc?

Again, thanks for your insight. Im definitely retaking the sats. I like a few schools you mentioned, but like for example, Tufts is much more around the sciences and I am steadfast in what I want to major in and pursue.

Thanks again and please let me know if you would like me to chance you or do something else in return :)

“No chance at ivies/equivalent schools” is too much of an absolute. Definitely apply, you’re a strong candidate.

Thanks for the advice imasophomore

Wharton and all are tough for everyone to get into, so if you are serious try to raise the ACT/SAT (I found the act so much easier). With the current stats, it will be tough because although your SAT is great, Ivy candidates have higher SATs, which helps a bit, but everything else looks good, so who knows.

Thanks for replying to me!

Of course, and thank you. I’m retaking the SAT and hopefully won’t f it up this time. I’m pulling for a solid 2250, with at least a 2200. Fingers crossed.

Again thanks and best of luck! :)

Ya if you can get a 2200/33 I’d say you’d be competitive

Ivies are reaches for ANYONE. So don’t be discouraged! But your stats are pretty good! I’d say that you are pretty secure at your safeties! But you can always apply Early A or D to your favourite Ivy or Stanford to up your chances. Hope this helped! and thanks for the chance! :)
