Breakdown of decisions

I called umich and talked to a lady at undergrad admissions and she told me that this year most applicants are going on the waitlist while a small percentage is being accepted/rejected. Does anyone know if people are ever accepted off the waitlist, or is it basically a rejection?

This undergraduate admissions lady sounds like an idiot because she told that to someone else. She doesn't mean people are getting waitlisted. People are getting deferred. Deferral is far from a death setence, I think it gives you about a 50/50 chance. The waitlist, however, is basically a rejection. They haven't gone to it in years. I don't know of anyone who's gotten the waitlist yet though.

I'd be suprised..no..shocked if they hit the waitlist this year.

my friend (international) got waitlisted

Well, she was a little off if she truly said only a "small percentage" are admitted/rejected. U-M is admitting a smaller number this year than last year, and given the big app pool, that means the percentage of students getting an admit is lower than usual. But a small percentage? No.

It's true that traditionally, U-M has a pretty large waitlist. For some of those waitlisted people, one could argue it would be more realistic for them to be denied (in terms of their likelihood of eventual admittance). But not for all--some of those students are just as strong as admitted people;there just wasn't room. Some of those people could be admitted off the waitlist if yield is lower than expected, or if U-M decides to change its freshmen targets late in the game (this has happened before, but I think the chances of this happening this year are darn close to zero).

In recent years, U-M hasn't gone to the waitlist because yield exceeded all expectations.

thats just what she told me when i asked her about deferral chances...

small percentage?? maybe...if they had a much larger app. pool but i was told by the admissions office that it is not true that they are admitting smaller number of students...I would rather believe that statement right there :) it's more hopeful lol
one thing i'm wondering is how hard is it really to get into U of M?

I really wonder how many spots they have open at this point, or how many people have already been accepted. Merely based on what i have heard through this forum, deferral acceptance rates are still expected to be around 40% at worst so i mean, i dont think its as bad as you might think. I called admissions today and she said everyone will hear by next week, she also stated that "not everyone will be able to see their respective decions online" not sure if she ment that only accepted students will or what..Anyways good luck everyone, one week to go!

it would be great if all the decisions are out by next week...but the admissions office lady told me that the notification process will continue till the end of April :s that'd be horrible!

at UM is there a difference between being waitlisted and deferred? thought that was the same thing

deferral comes before waitlist. Waitlist is the end all for the most part. Deferall means you aren't rejected or accepted, but they'll review your application over again. Waitlist means that they are done reviewing your application and if a spot opens up, you might be chosen.

I haven't heard yet and I was never deferred. Is this a good thing or a bad thing you think? Does anyone think I have a good shot at this point with a 3.79 UM GPA and a 2050 SAT? including this year, I have taken 4 AP's and 5 honors courses in High School.

idk...when did you apply? I'd make sure that you have all your stuff in because its kind of weird that you haven't heard by now.

I applied at the start of january and my file was complete i think january 28th

I wish they tell me by now;; Too bad that I'll have to send deposit to another college very soon since my I-20 will be expired soon and I need to get a new one from a college. I'll be up in Ithaca this fall :) I wish Umich does their decision job quickly for next year.
