BREAKING: Record 1,856 Students Apply Early Decision

The numbers have just come in for the most recent early decision cycle and a record 1,856 students have applied for early decision, breaking the previous record of 1,801.

Read more about it here: http://thedartmouth.com/2014/11/04/news/record-number-apply-early

I'll post details as they come.

I'm expecting the ED acceptance rate to be around 24-25% this year. I was however a bit surprised to see an increased in applicants given this is the first year that Dartmouth required a supplemental essay and other highly selective colleges such as Swarthmore have reported application drops when instituting similar requirements.

I'd like to hear your thoughts? What do you guys think the numbers will look like this year? :)

I had no idea that this was the first year dartmouth required supplement essays, but i dont think that would deter kids from applying anyway-- the increase in apps ED are probably just cause a few smarter kids or kids interested in dartmouth

@AfricanStudent32‌ Where did you get the figure 1,801? The link you provided says, “A record-high number of people — 1,856 — applied early decision to Dartmouth this year. The number of early applicants is more than 10 percent higher than last year’s figure, initially reported as 1,678 applicants.”

I guess there was a dip last year? What year did they receive 1,801 and what was the ED acceptance rate that year?

From the article  2011 had (the now second highest) applicant pool of 1,801.
UPenn just posted a 5% increase in applicants and Duke has posted a 2% in its applicant pool to put things a little more into perspective. Dartmouth has the biggest increase so far but we’re very early into the cycle.

The change is statistically meaningless. You work for the college and should know that. It certainly does not suggest that Dartmouth is becoming more attractive to students although the absence of scandals should help. After all, Dartmouth was on a downward spiral.

@lostaccount ? I do not get the impression that AfricanStudent32 works for Dartmouth.why do you think that/How do you know that? @AfricanStudent32 If this is true, can you give me a sense of release dates and what % of the ED applicants are recruited athletes? Thanks!

I thought that was the case. Am I wrong? Maybe I was misinformed. If so, sorry.

Yeah. I don’t work for Dartmouth. I’m an early decision applicant, hence my interest. Don’t agree with you about the numbers being meaningless though, especially when so much of the pool is qualified.

I agree. I was surprised by the increase in applications given the controversies in the past year.
