Breaks

how are breaks at amherst?

around winter precisely

Fall Break: usually 1 or 2 days around Columbus Day in mid-October
Thanksgiving Break: the entire week of Thanksgiving
Winter Break: mid-December until late January (also known as “Interterm”)
Spring Break: one week in March
Summer Break: mid-May until Labor Day

is it worth coming home for fall break if you live pretty far?

My kid is from the west coast, he only comes home for winter and summer breaks. It’s too long a trip and too expensive to do more than twice a year. It just depends on your finances and your preferences… it is a whole week off for Thanksgiving and for spring break, so there is time to go home if you want.

I would say most students do not go home for Fall Break, even if they live close to Amherst.

Students will often use that time to go home with friends who live nearby (MA, CT, NY) or visit friends at nearby colleges. It’s also a nice time just to have a long weekend on campus.

As a west coaster, I agree with rentof2. If you have to take a flight to get to/from school, most students choose to stick around Amherst (or if not AC then New England) for Fall Break.
