Brevard Summer Camp

Hello Everyone,

We just found out that my son has been accepted to the Brevard camp for Composition. The only camp he has ever been to is the one week Oberlin camp at the end of his freshman year. So, we are novices with entire summer camp process. Has anyone had graduating seniors/older kids go to this camp? Any tips for travel etc...? He will be flying from Colorado.

Thanks and good luck if your kids are applying to the Ivies!

Husband went as kid but that was really (40+ years) long time ago. However, D1 worked as counselor at girls camp near Brevard for past two summers and Brevard area=heaven to her! We tooks kids when they were young to see one of the concerts at music camp there and got to hear PDQ Bach (Peter Schickley?) give a talk…so much fun. I imagine the Asheville Airport is closest (and might be camps choice if they are picking kids up) but Greenville, SC is also close (only about hour away) and Southwest flies there so might be an option. Ds’ camp had girls fly into Asheville and were picked up there. I’m sure somewhere in information is stuff about maybe shipping trunk to camp. Ds camp strongly advising packing in a trunk (plastic footlocker) and shipping because of hassle at airports and cost of luggage. Are you coming with him or to pick him up at end. Chain hotels in Brevard are Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express and they fill up quick with all the camps in the area having drop-off and pick-up on weekends…so if you’re coming at some point, reserve early.

If it’s for the whole summer, be aware that temps can vary from very cool nights and nice days to 90s during the day.

I attended Brevard Music Festival last year and it was one of the greatest experience I’ve had at a festival. I was in the college division as a violin but from what I know the composition program is really great. For the composition program, most of the students were older, around the grad school age, although there were a couple undegrads and high school students. If you have any specific questions feel free to message me.

My D attended Brevard last summer, and she loved it! She was in the HS Vocal program, and attended the second session for 3 weeks. She flew there from New York into Asheville, and was picked up by someone who worked at Brevard, along with a bunch of other kids who flew in that morning. She enjoyed her time there very much, made a lot of great friends, and worked with some terrific teachers. Brevard is a very nice town, with shops and restaurants, and the kids can walk into town when they have free time. She has applied to attend again this summer. We visited athe end of the program, and rented a house nearby. It was a great experience for her. Good luck to your son!

momofmusician17, you might wish to see my notes in the “Music Festival Master List” thread. We have stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn in Asheville, about a 2 minute drive from the airport. Very nice hotel and nice location in a small but upscalish outdoor mall.
Delta, United and US Air service the airport there (no direct flights), and the program does provide pick up. Brevard does not quite have the “star power” name of some of the other programs around, for some reason, but the teaching is excellent and I am sure your son will have a very worthwhile experience. There will be plenty of kids in his age range, and they go “off campus” all the time together. The vibe is definitely more warm camaraderie than icy competition.

Thank you for all your responses. From everything I have read and your responses, Brevard seems like a great camp.

@clrn8mom - I like that Brevard is a camp where there is warm camaraderie. This seems like a very good fit for my son. When my son was at the Oberlin camp, he said the best part of the camp was all the other kids who were there. While my son is quietly competitive, he also wants everyone around him to be successful and doesn’t really look at other musicians as potential competition more as potential collaborators. :)

I am going to head on over to the music camp thread for more info.

Thanks again!

My 12th grade S went to Brevard for composition after 10th grade and for cello after 11th grade. He had an amazing time especially for composition! The composition program was mostly college students, but the HS students learned so much and they lived with the other HS students. S had 4 of his pieces performed. One word of advice - if the composition is very complicated, your S might want to get college players for a piece or know the level of the HS students he is working with. My S has many friends he still keeps in contact with and we ran into a college comp student on the audition circuit! Your S is going to have a fantastic time!

My husband and I rented two different houses for a week each summer - both with private waterfalls! Not much more expensive than the hotels in the area and very romantic. The county that Brevard is in has the most waterfalls of any county in the US and that includes Hawaii! We had a wonderful time hiking and going to concerts.
