Brick vs Concrete

Which is more aesthetically pleasing, traditional colonial style red brick colleges, or Greco-roman concrete universities?

====CONCRETE====

Too bad we can' make polls on here.

Psh.

Powell for the win.

Red brick!!

i like greco roman. its just more grand.

The concrete buildings are more grand, but brick buidings give a campus a much more inviting feel. But I'm partial to Gothic style buildings instead of Greco-Roman/Colonial.

what about buildings made out of steel?

Yeah, I'll second Gothic as my favorite university architectural style.

Eh, both UCLA and Berkeley are in areas prone to earthquakes, and needless to say, Berkeley was way smarter than UCLA to outfit buildings with concrete than brick...

Blah Blah Blah Blah Blah

:)

/But no really, all of UCLA's have been seismically rehabilitated so it's a non-issue.

Gothic @ Oxford

Remember this is about aesthetics, not seismic soundness.

I don't know, gothic architecture seems too prison-like.

i dunno, i think it looks badass. like a castle.

Gothic architecture, I think, is MUCH more impressive in person. I wasn't blown over by the style until I saw it myself.
I'd take Gothic over concrete and brick, but if I had to choose between the latter two, I'd go with concrete.

"what about buildings made out of steel?"

They don't count. J/K. But seriously I don't know of many colleges with steel buildings. Unless it's like a medical center or something...

Hmm...definitely brick.

This is a non-issue for Cal and UCLA, but in the winter, when it's cold and the snow is all gross and brown, gothic and concrete just looks amazingly depressing. Whereas cute little brick buildings in the snow reminds me of Christmas cards...

^Agreed (10).

i dont believe in either

i'm more of a gothic fan myself

plus they have dungeons! right?

Brick.....

Colonial-type brick. Or gothic, but not too over-the-top so that it starts to look like a massive church. The Roman-style ones look like they were built in the wrong country.

Have to be careful with just saying "brick" though, you can build lots of things from bricks. Some modern buildings here and there can be nice if they're done well. What I really hate is seeing buildings that look like they're 60s/70s standard brick high school buildings...very bland, very depressing, and most people go to college to get away from having to enter one every day. ;)

I second that thought about the 60/70 style brick.
