I'm a senior who will be applying regular decision to several colleges, all of which use the common app. I've already written the common app essay (first prompt), but I'm not sure if I should use it. I wrote it about a time over the summer when me and some friends went bridge jumping off of an abandoned railroad trestle. I believe the essay is very well written and really shows that I am a meticulous and calculating person, but I love taking risks and pushing myself. I am also a diver so I'm prone to jumping off of large objects. My only concern is that this "risqu

Lol you like to jump off tall things. not kill people. or sell drugs. They wont care. as long as it’s a well written essay they won’t mind the mischief.

^^ agreed, as long as you don’t come across as reckless you should be fine…

I love bridge jumping as well :)

Hahahaha I thought you meant bridge jumping as in suicide. I was going to be like “Uhhh, probably not a good idea to talk about wanting to kill yourself…”

But nah, your idea sounds really original and interesting.

lol, it’s a risky essay, not a risqu

risqu

As a person who knows several paraplegics who aquired that condition from diving, it makes me cringe. I feel all tragic and sad. Not the feeling you want your readers to have. It probably depends on who the adcoms are, and whether they are secret bridge jumpers, or friends of paraplegics, but you can’t really know that, can you?

I agree with 2bizee. As you grow older and you start to have friends who die doing stupid things, or just in accidents, you’ll look back and cringe too. That’s if you survive long enough, and hopefully you will. I am a little hesitant to say this, but to be completely honest, if I were an admissions officer, which I am not nor do I want to be, I don’t think I would admit a student reckless enough with his own life to “bridge jump.” I really don’t want to sound mean about it, but risking your life for nothing is stupid.

well, if you show that you are “a meticulous and calculating person” I’d say it’s fine. I mean, as long as you’re checking the water depth before you jump and all that stuff I think it’s good.

After all, I’m sure people write about sports which are pretty dangerous–football, skiing, etc.
