Bridging the gap between science and design?

I just graduated from high school and will be attending Mills College this fall. Mills doesn't have much in the way of design majors, but I decided to go there anyways because I'd like to get a more practical degree before I go into design. Let it be known that I truly love both science and design, I'm not just into science for the potential dough.

I'm thinking about majoring in Environmental Studies, but I want to eventually have a career in some kind of design. I was thinking that I'd either double major in Studio Art or minor in it. I'm liking product design right now, but I also like the idea of public interest design. My thought process is that with an Environmental Studies major I can use that knowledge to create sustainable products or incorporate that knowledge to have more environmentally-friendly design concepts. Are there many job opportunities/is there any hope for an Environmental Studies major, or is it just as impractical as trying to major in design?

Does my current plan sound practical or does someone have some input into a better plan?

Thanks so much.
