I have the FAS award for Bright Futures, meaning I get (or SHOULD get at least $1,236/semester (I only had 12 credits)). I had a registration hold on my account (thanks to which I missed out on CGS 2100 as I dropped CGS 2518 at the last minute).

Anyway, my tuition total for the Fall semester was $2,606. Looking at the finance section of MyFSU, I see that my Florida Prepaid plan paid $2463.16 towards that balance. Guess how much was collected from Bright Futures? $13.80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They were nice enough to give me $776.74 in financial aid refunds from BF.

This leaves me owing $130 to FSU for the fall, and I can't pick up a class because of it. What the happened to the rest of the $445.46?!?! I KNOW for a fact that that money was not spent anywhere for me so where did it go? I have $1,545 coming in for the spring and I'm wondering how much of that won't ever be spent.

Anyone have any ideas?!?!?!

Sorry for the lack of intelligence of this post but I'm too mad to think completely straight right now. It's not even the money that really bothers me it's the fact that I can't get the class I need. >:( I can't contact the FA office until Monday either!

I know that Bright Futures doesn’t disperse until after the drop/add period, but I was talking about last semester (mostly). I actually did end up getting it (somewhat) solved after visiting the financial aid office.

I looked today and saw that a Florida Prepaid Tuition Fee Waiver was placed on my account for $119, but it still doesn’t cover the tuition completely. So I still have like ~$3xx in Bright Futures unaccounted for. I’m not really able to understand why this is so difficult right now, but I’ll wait and see what happens (and hope it isn’t repeated this semester again).

The concept of having FPP pay before Bright Futures is ridiculous. What’s the difference between paying it all towards school first rather than taking the money and just mailing me a check?

In our experience, FPP always pays first(I don’t think the university has control over that - they receive from FPP office and apply it when they get it, and since its your prepaid acct, they could adjust and put back to the account if necessary) With BF, since that is a scholarship and run by gov’t and not a private acct, they have different funding process and I assume can only post once your classes are set and final. And lastly, FSU will then post any scholarships they are giving you. We typically have left over money based on all 3, and the extra goes to the students suntrust acct or if you live on campus can be used directly for dorm. The tuition fee waiver(assuming you had prepaid account prior to 2007) should be approximately $50 per credit hour, so the $119 doesn’t sound right.

Unfortunately, you’re going to have to get with the FSU financial aid office to settle this out. It sounds like something is screwy on your account.

No matter how things settle out, you wouldn’t be getting a financial aid refund towards your account from Bright Futures. Bright Futures doesn’t cover even half of the cost of a credit hour. Any refunds you get would have to come from a different source. If you have anything else on your account to pay besides tuition (housing, meal plan, health insurance, textbooks, etc), that could account for the ‘missing’ funds.
