Brilliant newspaper article ideas?

I'm editor-in-chief of my school newspaper, but I'm still having a problem finding the perfect story idea for myself! I only need one solid idea, but all help is welcome.

-One of my ideas is writing about what our teachers are allowed to say. Some teachers claim they can't share religious or political views or something in fear of getting fired, but other teachers openly share it. I was going to investigate that.. but I feel like it might fall through with no actual rules or no one wanting to talk to me about it.

-Second idea is something about sleep deprivation or stress and whether or not it's worth it. I feel like there's not a lot to write about this unless it became an opinion piece.. due to the fact that no one will probably give me good facts or anything. Perhaps someone can help with a better angle?

-My third idea excites me the most, but I don't really have an idea for it.. The leaves outside are all orange and golden and wonderful, but I can't think of a way to tie it back to the school or student life. I feel inspired by the outdoors, but I can't go anywhere with it!

Thanks in advance to anyone that actually read my post, and even more to those that help me out with ANY sort of ideas!

I’m an editor-in-chief too, ha. Do you have to write a news article? At my school the exec. editors only write editorials.

But anyway, I really like your first idea, and I think teachers would be willing to talk to you about that…either they don’t care if people know their opinions or they wouldn’t mind telling you why they want to keep that private. You could (and probably should) interview students as well, as many of them will have opinions on the issue.

The second idea is OK and we’re running a similar article in the features section. They made a survey that they sent out about activities and sleep and priorities in general. That would depend on how much time you have left before press though.

Personally, I would go with the one about political opinions, but that lines up more with my interests anyway.

You could always interview a teacher or something about their own experiences in high school. Get up close and personal. Embarrassing stories ftw. [I got away with it by telling them it was to be translated in French and their names wouldn’t be used. xD]

There’s a whooole lot of stuff out there on sleep deprivation and stress; you could definitely get something out of the article, if you chose to do it on that. Uberman schedule, Yerkes-Dodson law, etc. [As someone who runs on three hours of sleep each night, I’ve done endless research on sleep deprivation. x.x]

As far as leaves go–get a photographer and scatter the pictures throughout the newspaper! Or you could do something introspective about fall and the changing seasons, how after a few more years of high school we’ll be like them–scattered to the winds of change. So hold on tight to these memories while you still can. Although that sounds more like graduation-type stuff.

I hope it goes well! :)

Oh, I got responses!

-I guess people would talk to me about /why/ they don’t share their views. I was thinking more that they’d be scared to say something wrong, but I guess what you said made more sense! I don’t know about posting personal, embarrassing stories with a person’s name attached, haha.

-I did a school-wide survey last issue in 2 days… oh man, that was brutal. Thanks for mentioning the Uberman schedule. I haven’t heard of that before but that is definitely what I do, haha! I’ll definitely look into that more. This would be a cool thing to talk about.

Now these ideas just got a lot more fun. I don’t know about putting random trees around my paper… but I just realized how cool it might be to talk about ways to lower stress… somehow incorporate that into my article so I can talk about walking through the park or something. :3

If anyone stumbling through this topic happens to have any ideas at all for newspaper story ideas, it would be so helpful. Making this as open-ended as possible. Otherwise, thanks for the help again, you two. :)

talk about college confidential lolzz

I’m guessing you’re feature writing? I’m currently doing that in my journalism class, and my idea is quizzing the students’ knowledge of basic politics.
