So originally I wasn't planning to bring a bike to campus, as I never bike at home. But I was with my friend down the shore for a few days and we were biking around town and I realized how convenient it is (also a lot of fun!). Now I'm considering it.

Is it worth it to bring a bike? How much does it help getting to class/just around campus? Do the long winters ruin any usefulness? How easy are they to store while you're not using them?

And if you think it is worth it to have a bike...can anyone suggest a good bike to buy? I have one, but it's pretty small for me. Thanks for any help!

I actually did saw quite a few people riding bikes to classes, but remember how many hills there are and as norcalguy said, can’t use it during winter

Both of my sons used bikes freshman year and they never complained about it so I thought it was an acceptable means of transportation to and from classes. However, the bikes took a beating with the hills and they said it was miserable in the rain, and impossible in the snow. Of course their proclaimed misery was in part due to their appeal in “needing” a car on campus. You really don’t need a car but senior year they did have one. I must admit I was happy that they had one because they were all over the place senior year, and I got to see them more because they were able to come in for visits.

I’d say skip it for freshman year. If you need to get around quickly, learn the bus schedules (or just hop on one that you see–they generally stop all over campus) and take them since you’ll have a free bus pass for a year. Also, you can check out bikes from some of the libraries now (until winter hits, at least): [Big Red Bikes](http://bigredbikes.cornell.edu/). I had a bike freshman year, but I very very very rarely used it and it won’t do you any good between the end of November and late March because of the snow.

I like using my bike. the weather is fine through most of the fall semester. get something economical with wide enough tires, because the roads aren’t always great. learn the rules of the road as they pertain to cyclists, because they do pull people over! (it also makes you safer.) there are two bike racks in the front of every TCAT bus so you can combine your bus privileges with your bike if you want.

If you’re a freshman (i.e. living on North), do it. Not much point biking from West, but elsewhere you should be fine. But if it’s an inconvenience, you wouldn’t lose much not bringing one, esp. if you make only one round trip to Central on the average day.
