So I'm accepted into the Engineering college. But I'm going to try to live on main campus, not north. Is there any way for an incoming freshman to get a parking space, or anything like that? And is having a car worth it-- For groceries, movies, etc. Or is that all walking distance?

Parking is a huge issue on campus. I remember a couple of freshman having cars years ago but it was always a headache parking it way off campus. How would the university even know you had a car?

It isn’t that it isn’t allowed, simply that it is ridiculously difficult and unnecessary at that. There are plenty of ways to get around campus and also many different ways to get home no matter where you live.

its convenient if you can find a spot or know if you know anybody in a house who will rent a parking spot at a reasonable rate. like if you want to go to north campus to study or want to go anywhere to eat or want to go home wihtout arranging a ride. the parking structures are 180 a month I think, and a blue pass is about 700 a year if you know somebody that works for UMich that doesn’t need theres.

its not worth it to have a car. everything is close enough to walk, plus you’ll probably end up walking just as far to get to your car as you would if you just walked to where you wanted to go

I hear it’s too much of a hassle to bring a car. And the bus systems at U of M is terrifically convenient…I think the City and University busses come by stops every 10 min during the day and 15 min during the night.

I think a car in Ann Arbor would be a major pain. Parking is at a real premium and is not cheap. The free buses run until 2am and there is a free cab service after that if you are doing an all nighter at the library.
