My son will be attending RPI this fall mech engineering major. I know RPI allows for 1000 pages free of printing-but is that enough? Will he have to wait behind others? Or do the students primarily email their professors?

There are a ton of industrial printers around campus, he’ll never be “waiting” behind other students. There are times when the printers may be out of paper or ink though… if he is in a rush to get to class he may be out of luck. In most cases professors do not accept emailed assignments.

I’d bring a small printer if you are willing to pay for his paper and ink.

Are you sure about the 1000 pages of free printing? [Rensselaer Help Desk - Printing Charges](<a href=“Get Help | Information Services and Technology”>Get Help | Information Services and Technology) seems to indicate that the number is much smaller (somewhere between 125 and 156). Further, unless things have changed, color printing is never free. As for how many are actually used by a typical mechanical engineering major, I have no idea.

JG is correct, there are a lot of printers on campus. As long as you don’t limit your selection (i.e. are fine with printing outside of the library), you can almost always find some free printer nearby. There is that nonzero failure rate, though, so one advantage of having a printer is that you don’t have to worry last-minute whether or not the printers will fail to produce your homework assignment.

Emailing professors with homework isn’t very common, but it was an option in a large percentage of the senior/graduate-level classes I took (in math and computer science). I don’t know if that option is available in many MechE classes as well.

So sounds like to me he should bring a printer?

Thks - printer is going
