hey guys,

I guess I am open to paying for one, but how much is it?

You’re staying in the units? Absolutely not! the only parking you’d find is a half hour away, and it’s timed, so you need to move it every 2 hours. Berkeley won’t let you use their parking lots because you live on campus. There is absolutely no reason to, berkeley has great public transportation and a car is more trouble than it’s worth. Trust me.

but I see people living in units with cars…what if we need to drive around to grocery stores and stuff? Is it absolutely impossible to bring a car? what about a bicycle?

yes a bike is a much better option

nobody brings a car to the dorms. You live in the dorms, which means that you will mostly eat DC food. If you want to buy groceries, you can take the 51 to Safeway.

Wow, so even for juniors and seniors, they don’t bring cars over?

Living in the dorms? No. I have an apartment (ok… studio) in north berkeley and I first brought my car up. Biggest mistake ever. Even if you’re lucky to find a spot where you don’t have to move the car every 2 hours… it just sat there. It would be weeks at a time before I even started it up, and that was only to drive home for a weekend (I grew up in north bay). It seems like a good idea until it’s implemented, and it ends up just costing time and money.

A small number of people bring cars to the dorms. It’s very expensive though, 500+ a semester. There’s a parking structure that my friend used (owned by UC I believe) that was ~3 blocks west of Unit 2. Not sure what it was called though, sorry.

Your best bet, to my knowledge, is to get a permit for the Storage Lot. It’s a fair distance from campus, but it’s cheap and gives you access if you need it.

I’ve heard that you can park on-campus Friday Night - Sunday Night, though actually finding a space would be hell (if it’s true at all).

Try parkopedia.com people who have apartments with parking sometimes post there and you can rent the spot from them
