So I'll be bringing my car up to uva this year if I can ever figure out how it works. There is a myriad of conflicting information on the parking and transportation website. I'll be living in Brown Collage.

So how do I go about this whole bringing a car thing? Do I just take it up with me and then hope I get a pass? Are there different areas I can choose from to park it or do I just get one option? Everything on the website conflicts with everything else... its ridiculous.

so, um.. HELP

Parking last year was a mess, I don't blame you. I don't know where Brown parks, probably the stadium lot. I think your best bet is ask hazelorb or someone else in Brown.
Basically it was a "lottery" in which you had to drag your butt to the parking office at 7am on the Monday before school starts, stand in line (well, a bunch of us passed out, literally, in the parking lot in line thanks to a rowdy, late night of partying until 3am the night before...woot), and get a pass for Lambeth. I assume it might sort of be the same way for you, other than you'd get a Stadium pass and probably don't need to stand in line.

Everyone in Brown, minus our president/etc, parks at Emmet/Ivy, which will definitely have a spot for you.
The day(s) before you get a permit ($200), you can park at JPA or UHall. Then you'll get a little sensor for your car which lets you park on the top 2 levels of the garage. 2/3 of a mile from Smith. Which portal are you living in anyways.
Try to wait until 1 or 2 pm (an hour or two before they stop giving out permits) to go (last year you had to go to that building under the stadium). Otherwise you'll spend an hour+ in line just to get a guaranteed spot at Emmet/Ivy. The people at Lambeth, etc have a reason to go stand in line. We... Don't.

Hmm... I saw a bunch of stuff about Brown being able to park in the Emmit/Ivy garage, but then I saw other stuff that said University Hall. U Hall is like a mile from Brown so that kind of completely defeats the purpose of having a car up there, I might as well park it at my friend in C-Ville's house if I can't walk to it within a block or so, LOL.

So... looks like I am going to be getting up early on the 25th and stading in line for a while. There is no way I am going to do that and pay $200 to keep my car a mile from campus. Maybe there is a number to call so I can ask whats going on.

THANKS a ton hazel. I was typing that when you replied so I just saw it after I posted. :)

i wouldn't bring a car to uva...

yeah don't get up early you'll wait forever... just walk over with me lol facebook me about it we'll get a group together to go

7777777, why do you think it would be a bad idea to bring a car to uva?

also I forgot to mention I'll be living in Holmes, so the Emmit/Ivy garage is just a stones throw away from me.

sounds good, I'll let you know when it gets closer to the date.

if you guys are going to get a permit for emmet/ivey, DON'T waste your time on the first day getting a pass. It's absolutely not worth the trouble and you will be getting a spot. I parked there last year and I never had to park on the top level. Now this may be because last year they didn't have the sensors signifying that you have entered the top 2 floors (they might have but weren't used to ticket students) and some parked on the levels below.

If you're looking for a JPJ/Uhall permit, unless things have changed, they won't give one to students living on grounds. I still don't get why lambeth students go after lambeth parking anyways, it's like twice the price and the garage is right across the street.

Again, do NOT show up the first day if you're looking for the garage pass, go the following week to P&T and it will take 5-20 minutes and not 3-5 hours.

It's not exactly "right across the street" from Lambeth, and a hundred bucks extra meant your car was right there for you 24/7.

considering lambeth kids walk to class 10-15 minutes away, the 3-5 minute walk to the garage is nothing. Besides, everyone can park at lambeth after 5 and on weekends (when you might be using your car anyways).

I assume you are not a First Year. For thos reading who are, be aware that:

"First years may not register, store, or park vehicles on Grounds (Requests for exceptions due to physical disability are made to the Department of Student Health. All other requests for exceptions should be made to the Dean of Students.)"

of course.

then again, I did know a few first years that pulled it off. Not sure how that worked though.

I haven't yet learnt to drive. I actually want to learn this year, but I assume that would be difficult without a car of my own.

Yeah but when you friend wants a lift to class at 3pm, it's nice to just stroll out.
