Bringing up a low GPA?

I’m sure threads like this are recurrent on this forum, but I’m in need of a little reassurance and/or guidance.
I’m going into my second year of university. I had went away to school in the Fall of my freshman year and didn’t enjoy the experience so I applied to another school immediately and transferred in the Spring. Since I was unhappy at my original school I had devoted a lot of time to my studies and finished off the semester with a 3.7 gpa.
Now, fast forward to my Spring semester where I moved home, took a taxing part time job, and commuted over an hour and a half to Manhattan to go to school every day. I had a lot of trouble keeping up with my work with the school I transferred to having a curriculum that is a lot more rigorous and intensive. Obviously, one’s GPA does not transfer when one transfers schools so basically I’m now with a 2.6 gpa from my single semester at my current university and I’m panicking.
My question is, how difficult will it be for me to bring up my gpa in my upcoming 3 years? I’ve only taken 15 credits counting towards my gpa, however I have 32 in total. I’m planning on working a lot harder next semester because just looking at that number makes me seriously anxious(I’ve always been fairly good in school so this really came as a shock to me). I’m not expecting a miracle but I really wish I could graduate in the 3.4-3.6 range.

Have you tried using a GPA calculator to see what kind of grades you’d need?

So I had a 3.27 at the end of this past semester. I wanted to see what I had to do to get it to a 3.7-3.8. I assumed I’d be taking 15 hours every semester from then on. To get that 3.27 to a 3.78(?) I would have had to get straight A’s but your goal seems more reasonable. Give it a try!

Does your school allow you to retake a class and replace a lower grade with the better one?

Your grades from the other school don’t get averaged with your current grades for the purposes of figuring out your GPA at the current school but they don’t disappear either. You still have a record of having taken those classes , gotten those credits and earned those grades. So, for purposes outside of the current university, they still “count”. They still can be included in an overall GPA if you need to report GPA to others-or you can declare two GPAs by school. You did not say why you are concerned about GPA but for purposes of reporting your GPA outside the current university, your previous grades don’t disappear.
