So we enrolled our daughter in the CMU precollege drama and are awaiting to hear back from NYU. We did this to give her a chance to see if this is what she wants to do because she is not sure yet and neither are we.
However.
It’s very costly!
So in terms of training and leg up on SKILLS only, is there an advantage to just doing Broadway intensive in NYC vs going to a pricey PreCollege Program? She is looking at CMU and if she gets in, Tisch.

A general comment about pre-college programs. I think one of the best things kids get out of them is a real life feeling of what life in a BFA program will be like. I think it can cement if this is what they really want or not once they live it. That said, I don’t know that I’ve heard of many who have gone to one and decided against pursuing it.
What grade is your daughter in? I’m a junior and I enrolled in CMU Pre-College as well! Last year I did NYU Tisch Summer Program (NSB) and it was amazing!!! The reason why I choose to do the cmu program as a rising senior is because the program focuses on the colllege audition most of the time. I’ve heard through multiple that you’ll leave with around 6 songs and 6 monologues. Don’t get me wrong NYU was an amazing experience and I wouldn’t change it for the world, but I think it’s a better program for rising juniors. And as for Broadway Intensive I’m sure it’s amazing. I think one of my friends from NYU did that program right after it ended (or maybe it was Bway Evolved). Honestly I think it depends on your family is looking for. Me I really want to build my audition book, and I think that going to CMU to build it is perfect! If you need to ask me any questions about my experience last year at NYU just pm me! Also if you do end up choosing CMU you should also pm me so we can officially meet. I’m doing the MT program btw.
Congrats!!! Our daughter will be a riding junior… if she ends up going to CMU I’ll connect you guys!! Congratulations!!!
@speezagmom My daughter met several people at her pre-college programs that decided that pursuing a BFA was not for them after attending the programs. Or, they decided that teaching theatre, arts administration or theatre production was a better fit.
I don’t know kids who changed their minds after doing pre-college - but I know a number of them who went through all a BFA season entails…and then found out that studying theater is not like doing shows as an extracurricular
