Brokeback

ive seen both and felt that crash was much more moving and makes you think about life more in the long run... i hated the fact that the brokeback writers were saying that they should have won best picture... i mean its one thing if a critic does, but when the loser complains that they didnt win that is shady

i agree stonecold, i think that "Crash" was equally deserving in the Best Picture category. And i like it better than Brokeback (even though i love brokeback) because i feel like it has more relevance to my life.

Is that out on video yet?

i agree with stonecold, that is by far the shadiest thing ive ever heard in my entire life. ever.

I already posted this in the Cafe, but I will post it again, because I don't feel like re-typing everything.

"Brokeback Mountain, not Crash, is the better film. I already explained my logic as to why.

One of the main reasons BBM lost was because it had already run out of steam by Oscars night.. the interest had piqued. For a long time, BBM and Good Night, and Good Luck were head-to-head, not BBM and Crash. I really don't get people's sudden infatuation with Crash in the final weeks before the Oscars. If it's so great of a film, why didn't more critics give it praise before? Also, Oprah's interest in Crash may have helped (I don't know if the show she devoted to Crash was before or after the votes were cast). According to several highly-respected movie critics, Crash's being set in LA also helped, since most voters (comprised of Hollywood actors and actresses) are from there and could relate to the movie. The voters are certainly not movie critics in the strict sense.

Why didn't more awards shows reflect that Crash is the best film of the year?
Crash managed a Best Picture win only at the Chicago Film Critics Association Awards (Ebert really pushed for this win). Brokeback Mountain won Best Picture at the following awards shows:

Boston Society of Film Critics Awards,
British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (British Oscars),
Broadcast Film Critics (Critics' Choice Awards),
Dallas Fort-Worth Film Critics,
Golden Globe Awards,
Independent Spirit Awards,
Iowa Film Critics,
Las Vegas Film Critics,
London Critics' Circle,
Los Angeles Film Critics,
New York City Film Critics,
PGA Golden Laurel,
St. Louis Gateway Film Critics,
San Francisco Film Critics,
Satellite Awards,
Southeast Film Critics,
Utah Film Critics,
Vancouver Film Critics Circle,
Venice International Film Festival

BBM is also #1 on the top ten list of movies. This list was voted on by film critics: <a href="http://www.moviecitynews.com/awards/2006/top_tens/00_chart.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.moviecitynews.com/awards/2006/top_tens/00_chart.html</a></p>

Finally, if you go to moviefone.com, you will find that Brokeback Mountain's average critic rating is 92/100. The following gave it a perfect 100: Wall Street Journal, San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Hollywood Reporter, Chicago Sun-Times, Los Angeles Times, and Rolling Stone. ( <a href="http://movies.aol.com/movie/main.adp?tab=reviews&mid=25424%5B/url%5D">http://movies.aol.com/movie/main.adp?tab=reviews&mid=25424</a> )

Crash's average critic rating is 72, with a perfect score only from Entertainment Weekly and Chicago Sun-Times (Ebert's review.. I told you he really pushed for this film to be voted Best Picture, at least in Chicago).
<a href="http://movies.aol.com/movie/main.adp?tab=reviews&mid=20745%5B/url%5D">http://movies.aol.com/movie/main.adp?tab=reviews&mid=20745</a>"</p>

at least ebert was right about crash beating bbm

But it's not because Crash is better. He based his predictions on the last minute buzz about Crash.

I really want to see it. The story is touching and I feel like from what I've heard, Gyllenhaal and Ledger captured the roles very well. I don't think this is one of those hyped up flicks that'll disappoint, either.

Everyone I've talked to loves it.

you should see it samanthalynn, it was a really good movie, it deserves all of the accolades.

Oh...and Crash is one of my favorite movies. It deserved Best Picture, definitely.

Yes, yes. Accolades galore.

But hot guys too, you know?

that was initially my draw too. Heath Ledger and Jake gyllenhaal, damn....

Ahh. I came home today and started watching Crash and fell asleep. It seemed interesting so far, though, so I'm gonna try to finish it tomorrow.

i loved both movies, but i feel that crash made me think a bit more....one of those movies where i just sat in silence for five minutes afterwards. i think that either of them would have deserved it.

as for the person who listed the numerous reasons why brokeback mountain should have won...your reasons were valid, but keep in mind that the voters in the Academy don't vote based on what other awards that the film received, but one who they believe to deserve it.

lastly, the academy doesn't vote as a collective body, remember....it's comprised of individuals, and i guess a lot of them thought that crash deserved the win.

eh it was okay. crash was better. brokeback needed more gay sex to be a better movie.

I knew that the Academy doesn't vote as a collective body. There are nearly 6,000 Academy members (most of whom vote), and I'm aware of that. I'm also aware that Academy voters don't care much for which movie won the most awards, even though the buzz those awards create does help a lot. I was simply making a point that regardless of who won the Oscars, BBM is the better film, based on my impression and the impression of the critics. Of course, this is my opinion, and you have yours.

Brokeback Mountain = Homos on the Range

Forgive me. Hahaha.

Crash also had a win at the SAG for "Best Ensemble," which is the SAG's equivalent for Best Picture.

Not exactly. The "Best Ensemble" recognized the performances alone, not the overall movie, just like the DGA recognizes the directors alone. The SAG win definitely helped Crash, since the SAG Awards was one of the last few events leading up to the Oscars.

just wondering, how many GUYS here have actually seen brokeback, besides me.
