Hello everyone

I am attending UIUC this Fall and one of the most important things for me would have to be housing. I've been seriously considering Bromley yet I've been hearing word on the interwebz that the place is quite bad (terrible food, little social life, etc.)

I am an international from South Korea so I pretty much have no idea how college is like. I consider myself pretty social and pretty open to partying, etc. I was wondering if anyone could share insight into how Bromley Hall really is like.

just finishing up my freshman year at bromley.

social life is good if you make an effort to get to know people. you are less likely to know the people on your floor than people you just by walking around and such. lots of people here join a frat, or have other social lives that are mainly outside the dorm. it is not like in 6pack where kids just walk into each others rooms freely as much.

i wouldn’t call the food terrible. when it’s bad, there’s always alternatives that will be there at every meal. but usually at each meal there’s at least one or two unique things that im going to like. definitely not restaurant quality, but ive eaten and I.T. and Ikenberry cafeterias too, and neither are really that much better (Ikenberry has more options because it serves more people, but its overall quality is comparable).

if youre thinking about private housing and have the means to spend money on it, id consider looking at Illini Tower (I.T.). it’s similar to bromley in both of the above aspects, but you get a full kitchen and a private common room/lounge for you, your roommate and your two suitemates. the rooms are a lot more spacious, and you can get away with smoking out the window in your bedroom pretty easily because your bedroom isn’t connected to the hallway, if that’s your thing. see the floormaps on their web site.

Would you consider the 6-pack? I think it’s great that you are really social and “open to partying” and keep an open mind when meeting the hordes of illinois-ans on campus. My son met a good friend from South Korea in one of his classes, and it’s been a great experience for him to get to know this young man and others from your country. In fact, over the summer, several of them came to my home to explore Chicago.

Sometimes, people tend to self segregate and do not get to know students from other countries/cultures. If that doesn’t describe you, I would almost recommend that you go to university housing, (such as the 6 pack) and be friendly. Most people would be very warm and inviting, and enjoy getting to know you, IMO.

just as an aside, one of the things i loved about bromley this year is that you don’t need to leave the building to get studying done. in 6pack i hear of kids saying they can only study at libraries because it can get too loud and distracting there (depending on time of day, day of week, etc). at bromley i always felt i could study in my room whenever i want. although to be fair, my room was in a corner so it was a little easier. but i think most residents would agree.

and if it does get too loud by your room, bromley opens up the cafeteria for silent studying from 8pm-1am sunday through thursday nights. very convenient.
