Broome Street Dorm

Anyone have any experience with Broome Street?? Location not too bad and I hear large rooms. Thanks in advance...

D is going to be dorming there. We visited this weekend. It is up the block from Little Italy, 2 blocks from Chinatown and you can cut through the back of Bloomiongdale’s to get to Broadway and Soho. The block that the dorm is on is a little quiet, but there is a deli /pizzeria/ grocery open in the building 24/7. It certainly does not have the convenience of some other dorms, but it really should be no more than a 20 minute walk without distractions. There really is no convenient way to use public transportaion to the Washington Square Park area. I think my D will be memorizing the NYU trolley’s schedule.

Next year will be my second year living in Broome. I’m assuming you know it’s the Residential College so you have to apply and be accepted in order to live there. I have to say I absolutely adore Broome … I got stuck with some pretty bad roommates last year, but I had a view of the Police Building and nothing beats being a block away from Eileen’s, La Esquina, and Little Italy. It’s so convenient, and honestly, the walk is refreshing. It’s only a 15 minute walk to campus, and I only take the bus when it is raining. You can walk down Broadway (which can be quite annoying because it is so busy) but I prefer to walk down Lafayette or Mercer, which are a little more manageable. In fact, when I do ride the bus, half the time the bus driver doesn’t even stop and I am forced to walk from Lafayette dorm. Frustrating! As for the ‘pizzeria’ downstairs, I only buy soda there - everything else is pretty gross and covered in dust. My roommate, however, likes to buy coffee there - so whatever looks clean enough to you. The rooms are pretty large, yeah, and the wood floors are nice. I don’t know - it’s a dorm, and I like it there. If you live there, you’ve got to check out Saha Thai too … yum yum!

I’m moving in broome this fall and am wondering about the computer/ desk situation. I’ve got a pretty big computer setup and am hoping it will fit ( 27 in iMac and a 27 in secondary display). Anyone have any input?

I’m on the 10th floor if it makes a difference

The furniture D had in Broome was identical to what she had as a freshman in Weinstein. Hope that helps.

I’m not a Returning student but a transfer student so I’m not familiar with the furniture

Hey, this is my first semester at NYU and I’m currently in Gramercy. It’s a super nice dorm but I really don’t like living in midtown and getting to know people on my floor or within the rest of the dorm is pretty hopeless. So, I’m thinking of applying to Broome for next year but I’m also looking at Carlyle for one of the explorations programs. Is it super loud in Broome? I walked by it today and the traffic heading for the tunnel was ridiculously loud. Also, what are the kitchens like? Is there any kind of lounge in the dorm? Would you recommend Carlyle or Broome? My thing with Carlyle is that I don’t really like Union all that much - spent too much time there in middle school! Thanks for any info.
