I really want to go to Brown Class of 2014 hopeful. Bump please!

When I look at chances like this, I can’t help but have an ■■■ moment. Looks like I’m headed for Tulane, because people like you make it impossible to get into brown.

I’d like to remind everyone that you can have one decent extracurricular and if you write about it passionately you have a better chance than a person who’s raised 100,000 dollars for Myanmar orphans and writes it like they just did it to get into college.

I’m surprised that you are going for Brown and not the Harvard/NEC and Yale / Yale Music double programs! You can get a BA and an MM (Master of Music) in 5 years in those programs. That being said I’m quite glad that you are applying to Brown because I am a composer (2x ASCAP Morton Gould Finalist) and so it’s nice to hear that there are exceptional musicians outside of the conservitory system.

Your ECs are OUTSTANDING, If you write about Viola passionately Harvard and Yale would not be much of a reach, especially since your SAT scores are quite a bit better than your GPA.

More troubling than two Cs after serious illness in the family is your weighted GPA; unless you attend a school which offers very very few AP/honors class, you have little to no chance of gaining admittance to Brown.

However, your music credentials sound superb. Depending on how they come across in your application they may eclipse your lack of academic rigor.

Also, if Chinese is your native language I would advise that you take an additional SAT II.

what state are you from and is your high school hard, and where else are the spots in your grades outside the two C’s?
If you can explain the grades, or be showing an upward trend through junior/senior year I’m going to say you have as good a shot as anyone, though of course it depends on how your actual application is. I got in with a 2280, and actually I’m already class of 2014 cuz I’m deferring for a year. maybe i’ll see you there.

im in california and i go to a public high school that’s ranked top 50 in the nation so it gets pretty competitive. There is definitely an upward trend, and my grades are just a mixture of Bs and As in addition to those two Cs.

You’re a great applicant. Apply to whatever schools you love. Honestly. Don’t be intimidated by them. Your grades are fine, and any curricular insecurities you have are more than compensated for by your extracurriculars.

Apply to the most interesting schools for you and include some schools where your academic profile and other achievements will place you solidly within their range of admits. An applicant like you should be way more relaxed and optimistic than you seem to be!

EDIT: Also, your counselor recommendations definitely need to CLEARLY mention reasons behind your C grades. A family illness is excellent justification, and should be included.
