Brown and others Chance Me

Hi

I'm looking at: Cornell, Brown, BU, NYU, Rochester, Williams, Carnegie, UVA, Tufts, UMass Amherst, WPI, Northeastern, UIUC. Looking to do something with math as of right now... Applying to the Arts and Sciences (Liberal Arts) colleges for most of these schools.

I attend a well-renowed, private Catholic HS in MA

3.7 GPA unweighted
2160 SAT - 690 CR, 720 MATH, 750 WRITING, 31 ACT - TAKING THE SAT ONCE MORE AND MY SECOND ACT RESULTS ARE YET TO BE DETERMINED

SAT SUBJECT TESTS:
750 MATH II
670 PHYSICS
660 US HISTORY

AP Scholar with Honor - 9 AP classes
National Honor Society
Honor Roll

Varsity Rower - Winner of a team trophy, a bronze medal, and a silver medal (Hoping this helps)
National Honor Society
Varsity Math Team
105 Hospital Volunteer Hours and another 20 from the Library
I work at Kumon - I have teaching/tutoring experience in Math and English
Investment Club -Co-Founder
Chess Club
I play guitar and piano
I raised money and participated in a Boston Heart Walk this fall
I attended a leadership institute, I led retreats for underclassmen and I helped incoming freshman adjust to life in HS
Led a Kairos retreat as a senior

My writing skills are well above par; I've been told that my essay is very good so I'm not too worried about that aspect of my resume. I'm getting recommendations from my Calc teacher and a teacher of mine who was a BU Trustee Scholar.

I'm hoping my successes in crew and relatively solid test scores can help shadow my GPA a bit... Although I'll have taken 9 APs and this GPA is unweighted... I have a quirky essay that I think will be memorable to most. Likely not to receive financial aid...

I WILL CHANCE BACK

Please give me an idea at my schools

You are on the bubble. But if you are recruitable in crew that is a game changer.

@BrownParent I’m not good enough to get recruited… I do intend on writing about crew and displaying what it has brought to my life. I am an accomplished rower so I’m hoping that this helps a lot

You have a chance but I haven’t read your essays or letters of rec.

@hadeelrm what are your thoughts based on what I’ve presented above? SAT, GPA, EC’s, etc…

For Brown, Cornell and Williams, you are on the outer edge. That said, if you have a compelling statement to present, it might have some legs. My daughter got into Yale, Brown and Dartmouth, with just a slightly lower SAT, higher GPA and rank, but also a stated ranked cross-country athlete and a URM female, from an area of the country that does not tend to yield many applicants. One of your big hurdles, is that regionally, your are from a highly competitive, over-represented area.

Cornell, Brown. Williams are reaches
BU, NYU, Rochester, Tufts are matches
\Carnegie, UVA, are high matches

Thanks guys, any other thoughts???

UVA is a very very very high reach. They take the majority of their class in state and only take extremely qualified applicants out of state. Pretty good chances at other schools

@ucladude I didn’t know that about UVA, thanks for the info

I think that it would be a reach for you at williams, brown, and cornell. However, I believe that you should get into at least one or more schools in the NYU UVA category. It think you are in for the rest of the schools.

thanks for your thoughts! @xgarrison96

chance back?

any other thoughts/opinions?

If your new SATs for CR and Math come closer to 750, your chances increase. However, the crew EC will not have a significant impact since you indicate you are not recruitable. Agree with above posters that Brown, Cornell, Williams, UVA are big reaches. Others seem within reach—good luck.

thanks for the opinion @fauve

brown, williams, cornell -> mid-high reaches
tufts, uva,carnegie->low/mid reaches
nyu, rochester->target
BU, UMass, WPI, Northeastern, UIUC->safety
^^based on my (in some cases) limited knowledge

Thanks for opinions anyone else?
