Since Brown emphasizes individuality and passion, is it okay if I show my passion for literature and writing by submitting a few of my writing pieces?
I’ve heard of someone submitting their research paper on an independent study of feminism (40 pages), so could I submit my own research paper which I am very proud of (16 pages)? I’m also thinking of submitting a short story and maybe a poem or two. Would this help increase my chances of getting into Brown or would it look like I’m trying too hard?
Thanks!

Somewhere on the Brown website there are guidelines for submitting supporting material like writing samples. I suggest you search for that.

It’s fine to submit writing samples, but I suggest limiting yourself to one or two short pieces. It’s better to have your teacher rave about your paper on feminism than submit the actual paper. Trust me, admissions doesn’t have the time to read a 40-page paper.

You should send a one-page abstract of your paper. F&R is correct. No one will read your 16pp missive. Don’t rely on rumor. Go to the source for info.

Nothin wrong with trying too hard – just learn how to do it. GL to you

I concur with fireandrain and T26E4 – less is more. The adcoms have nearly 30,000 applications to work through within a limited timeframe and undoubtedly they get little sleep as it is during those months. Why not get a letter of recommendation from your writing teacher and have her describe your strengths?

You can also try to find ways to mention these pursuits yourself in essays and your interview. Brown definitely wants to hear about your 40 page and 16 page papers, but they certainly don’t want to actually read them.
