Brown Application

I submitted my application some time ago; should I expect any confirmation that it was received? I'm assuming it was, as I did not get any email bounce-back reply, but I wanted to make sure that nothing bizarre happened.

I might appear paranoid, but - for all those brown residents out there - just take this as a sign of my conviction...

By the way, the Waldo question was particularly off the wall - original (in a good way: who would think of it?), and great fun to answer. I can't imagine the realm of responses you will get on that one.

I am planning on mailing mine in tomorrow. Hopefully it will get there in time, it only has to be postmarked by the 31 right? If it has to be received I guess I can scan it and send it in. meh

I'm really cool with the whole concept of the Brown residential life and it sounds like a lot of fun! But, in conversation with other accepted kids, they seem to be so unfamiliar with it and won't even consider it as a housing option. Are they just uninformed, or am I missing something?

Good! I don't need more competition in the app. process ;)

powderpuff, the problem is that most first years are focused on the two main places of housing given to them: Old and New dorms. Many don't notice the opportunities of living in Brown or the IRC. All first years are scared away from Hereford during orientation (oh wait, orientation hasn't started yet...). That's just how it is. Brown isn't for everyone just like going to Rugby every weekend isn't for everyone.

I'm sure they got it - they don't even look at any of the apps until they are ALL in... I'm pretty sure the reading is this weekend (I just went down last weekend, and its a 5+ hour drive for me, so I won't be reading your apps but I will be there in spirit hehe). Good luck to all!! :)

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure that an attached MS word document was alright.

A few years ago there was a op-ed piece in the Cavalier Daily that was negative about the Brown residential life. It spoke negatively about a "star wars" element, a boring/lifeless Brown quad, and an aloof sort of snobbery about the Brownies. I was checking various links when I googled Brown College at MH.
It was written by a young student who was staying in the traditional dorms. I couldn't tell if he was just sour about life, or perhaps he had been rejected from Brown or what???
I really like so far what I read about Brown. I, too, thought that the application was the most fun I've had all year in filling out an application.
However, is there an unhealthy fascination with Star Wars, and Dungeons and Dragons sort of stuff? An alumnus of UVA that I know, said that -that was his impression. Actually, he used the word "nerds".
OK. Now I know I'm asking a loaded question and I sure am glad this is anonymous.

well, as a current Brown applicant, hopeful Brown resident, and all-around nerd I think the nerd stereotype is probably pretty accurate. I assume Brown and Honors housing is where you will find the largest 'nerd density' (that and the anime club:p, and the speedcubing club I am gonna start ;)) but I get the feeling Brown may actually be a bit more nerdy than Echols/Rodman/CSS housing, which is a small part of the reason I am applying to Brown when I could live in Scholars dorms. I think Brown gives some opportunities that other places have to (where else can I take 'introduction to altruistic philosophy'??) so thats a another huge part of it., etc. etc. After talking to a mutual friend of Hazelorb and myself who also lives in BC, I was convinced it would be a cool place.

I decided to go ahead and scan it and email it in as well as mailing it. I can't get it off until tomorrow morn and it wont get there by Friday if I don't.

Any other opinions out there? Is Brown a haven for Dungeons and Dragon/Star War fanatics?? Is the word "nerd" appropriate? Brown sounds so cool to me in terms of history, residential life/fun, location, private rooms, beautiful architecture, etc......
I'm preppy, smart, funny, and enjoy socialization. I'm not sold on the "first year experience", but don't want to be in a world of people that have different agendas, as I've outlined above.
Deadlines are fast approaching. I'd love to hear input on this. Thanks.

deadline like today :)?

Honestly, I can't really help you in the decision, I don't live there so what I am giving is just hearsay, and the reasons I want to

"It spoke negatively about a "star wars" element, a boring/lifeless Brown quad, and an aloof sort of snobbery about the Brownies. I was checking various links when I googled Brown College at MH."

As someone who lived in Brown for the past two years, I'd say the above description is fairly correct. Definitely snobby (f*** preppy fratboy/sorority girl attitude, you are not cultured enough attitude), artsy, and indie. However, there are also a lot of cool people I wouldnt have met had I not lived in Brown.

The key thing about Brown that you all should know is this: (they dont tell you in the application):

Out of the 250 residents in Brown, only about 50 participate in Brown social events actively. These are the core Brownies, Brown stereotype wouldnt exist without them. The rest are mostly cool/hip/indie kids, but dont really identify themselves too much with Brown other than a place to live.

Well, I would identify myself as BC's resident geek.... I put up pi's on everyone's door for pi day and so on... But I would disagree that everyone in Brown is off playing D&D. I think that it is a haven for all the non-mainstream kids, and each little group of such has adequate representation in Brown. There are the music snobs, the video game addicts, the dorks, and then also kids who like to wear sundresses versus nature loving kids who walk around without shoes on. We get it all. The sundress wearing portion would be in the minority.

I would half agree with what "untilted" said, as far as there are maybe 50 people who actively participate. However, of the other 200, there are only 50 who would only identify Brown as a place to live. The other 150 come and go around Brown and maybe you know who they are because sometimes they show up at events. I love Brown and I try to participate in events once every week or two, but as I have other friends outside of Brown I do other things with my time as well. Those 50 core people pretty much live in Brown 24/7 and only have friends in Brown - really watch out for this - they love it but it's definitely something I'm glad I'm not a part of, if that makes sense. They are the ones giving off the elitist stereotype I would say, as they even give that off to current Brownies who don't devote their life to Brown... It's pretty annoying. Those 50 people who never say hi to other Brownies - I don't know how they got in and it is upsetting that they are in Brown when 50 other people who might participate more could have their spots. I hate to mar the Comm school, but most of those kids are a part of that as Brown is right next to the Comm school.

Anyways... I don't want people on this board to think that Brownies all have pocket protectors, etc, bc it's just not true... But stereotypes exist for a reason. I have read that article, and I started going to the quad on a weekly basis after that lol. We have night events there but during the day it might be deserted - however, remember that we have 2 lounges and 2 other outside quad like places to fill up as well.

PS. As an active member of the anime club, CAINE, those kids aren't dorks either. We have a very miniscule overlap with the scifi club, and the rest of the ppl are not at all dorks (I stand out for being dorky in that club). Though, the boys do have an obsession with 4chan... Us girls personally like Jack Sparrow and Justin Timberlake as much as anime. ;)

WAIT SPEEDCUBING i totally missed that part. ummmmm you me and this guy named saam are starting a cube club then. i dont speed (i dont use algorithms, sorry, lol), but he does, and we're teaching a short course on it in the spring we decided. he's one of the ra's in brown this coming year... ummm facebook me now. you can find me by searching for "quad 07-08" which is a uva group i made. now. lol.

well I just learned a lot, the first being that hazelorb is a girl. Which baffled me before I realized that I had no reason to assume otherwise.

By the way I think the difference between nerd, dork, and geek needs to be addressed here at some point, dork implying utter social ineptness, geek implying plays D&D and watches starwars all day, and nerd implying well, writing pi on everyones door ;), or my case an unhealthy obsession with Richard Feynman and recently discovered fascination with Rubik's cubes.

The point is, not everyone in Brown fits into any of these three, but some do. It seems the best way to see if you would fit in would be to see if you describe yourself as 'an indie kid' - do things on your own (and I don't mean the 'if you don't nonconform just like us then you aren't a nonconformist' indie kids, they are quite annoying). It seems the polar opposite of the UVa stereotype is what is attracted to brown college

remember to take what I say with a grain of salt, due to my whole not being there yet

SWEEET hazelorb!

I just started about a month ago when I picked it back up (I hadn't touched one since I was very little, when I could apparently do them with ease according to mommy, but I don't really remember).

I hadn't used algorithms until I started trying to get faster. I learned a couple, and now I am in the process of memorizing some top layer algorithms to compliment the Petrus method. The one I am using a different than most, but only requires 20 alg's, unlike Friedrich, which takes 72... no thanks

edit
I have another friend thats coming to UVa and applying to Brown who cubes as well. And I actually don't have a facebook... maybe I'll make one later if I get some time, lol

lol, everyone on this board thinks i am a boy for some reason... well except all the ppl i know in person (that would be malex, untilted, tenniscraze, bklyn........)

edit: lol i replied too soon obv, no facebook, boo, make one lol

yeah, your not the first person who has told me to make one. maybe I shall, I have been shying away from things like that since I deleted my myspace last year.

What does "indie" mean??
And thanks everyone for responding and in an honest manner. I feel like I'm getting a good inside look at Brown, and I still like it very much!
I'm not a conformist, but I'm definitely not defiantly non-conformist. I just do what is right for me, no real agenda.
My application is in!

People often do have a tenancy to assign gender on this board... I won't profess to any knowledge concerning speedcubing (does that have anything to do with a rubicks cube?), but I wanted to take advantage of the sudden flurry of posting to ask a question.

This is repetitive, I know, but my earlier post was lost amidst the activity: Is a Microsoft word document (email attachment) an ok format for the Brown application? This is the last day to submit, after all, and I want to make certain that I didn't mess up.
