Hi everyone! I hope you guys can give me an idea as to whether or not I would be a solid candidate for Brown!

I am rising junior in a good high school from Minnesota. I’d like to study Aplied Mathematics and Economics.

UW GPA: 3.96
W GPA: 4.11
W Class Rank: 10/296 (~top 3%)

ACT: composite: 30 (31 E, 32 M, 30 R, 25 S, 8/12 essay)
I took this once without any prep whatsoever at the end of my sophomore year. I know I will take this at least twice more. I’ve been practicing a little bit the reading and science sections and I’ve been averaging a 33 R and 31 S! Brown’s average is only a 31, anyway.

Will try taking SAT and SAT IIs.

Course Load: I’ve been enrolled in the most rigorous classes available. The only AP offered to underclassmen was AP US History (4).

-Junior Year
AP Language
AP Literature
AP US Government
AP Statistics
Pre-Calculus (required and advanced)
French III
Intro to Business/Sales and Marketing

-Prospective Senior Year

AP Art History
AP Chemistry
AP Calculus BC

I really appreciate everyone for reading this! Please let me know if there are any schools besides these that might be a good (or better) match for me!
Let me know what I can improve on! What would else should I do!

I don’t “chance” people for top schools b/c they are too random, but I will evaluate. The 31 average includes everyone (athletes, legacy, minorities, famous people) so keep trying to improve because a 30 really is pretty weak. Your EC’s actually have some good leadership stuff, but your essays need to be great and show passion. Schools like Boston College are more realistic right now, but Brown admissions are pretty weird.

@zonis20 Thanks for the input. I know that chance threads, especially for Ivys, are pretty ridiculous, but I just wanted to know whether or not I was stupid for thinking I had a shot.

I’m only a junior, but I really plan on starting essays incredibly early to show this. On top of the essays, I am constantly searching for something that will be predominant (internship, volunteer abroad, etc.) With more studying, I think I could pretty reasonably get a ~33.

I am considering Carnegie Mellon, Berkeley, and schools like WUSTL or UChicago. Is this more realistic?

Everything looks awesome to me other than the ACT. Your ECs are great, I don’t know how you managed to do that over the past 2 years!
As everyone here will tell you, what’s most important about Brown is demonstrating your uniqueness and your passions. Essay/recs/ECs are going to be super important.
But no, you shouldn’t feel stupid for thinking you have a shot. You’re on the right track and probably ahead of most of your peers.
As far as “more realistic” goes, yes, you’ll have a better chance at those schools. Other really good schools I would recommend: Tufts, Duke, Northwestern, Rice.

Thanks, overacheiver2012 (I think that’s spelt wrong haha)!

I think Brown would be more of a wing-it reach for me, and I’m really cool with that. I really like Northwestern, but those other schools are amazing too! I appreciate your response…

Looks solid to me! The 30 ACT is a bit below average, but like you, I got the same score with little preparation (albeit in junior year) and raised it a good three points higher during my senior fall. So that shouldn’t be a problem if you take this time to ready yourself for it. And your extracurriculars are impressive! Like people have said, Ivy admissions are hard to predict, but knock 'em out with those essays and keep the enthusiasm up and you’ll be a strong candidate. I’ve always had this feeling that Brown admissions has a good sense of whether someone has a genuine interest in the school on a deeper level than just wanting to get into an Ivy, so if you can convey this in your writing, then that’ll certainly win you some points. Best of luck!

Haha, I realized my typo a split second after I registered here and decided to keep it for the ironic value. After all, what honest overachiever would manage to misspell overachiever?
Any time. You sound genuinely interested/enthusiastic in Brown so good luck.

Thank you, rjdorado! May I ask how you prepped? (tutor/books/practice tests/something)

Hahaha I think there is some humor points to that, overacheiver. Works for me!
