Brown is my dream school. Honestly, I don't know if I would really be happy anywhere else.

Anyways, my stats:

1510 SAT (730 V, 780 M)
790, 720, 700 SAT IIs (may retake)
Will take ACT this Spring

I am 17 years old, used to be homeschooled. Taken college classes for the past two years, 4.0 GPA, well rounded education, intensive courses, etc.

I've done about 15-20 hours every week of various volunteer work, internships, etc. Planning to spend the next year in Europe studying sustainable architecture. I plan on applying to Brown as a Freshman ED this Fall after spending time in Europe, also taking more summer courses and possibly volunteering a bit abroad.

I'm an excellent writer and have terrific recommendations.

Do people think I stand a decent chance at Brown?

I thought my chances were alright, too, but now I'm going here and everyone is like "AAAH I HAVE A 1580 SAT AND 48573498327432487 EXTRACURRICULARS AND APS WILL I BE ACCEPTED????????????" and it is freaking me out.

eh...college confidential consists of the many individuals who need to have motivation, confidence, and "impress" other students in order to boost their own egos, in actuality the technique works quite well, don't worry about anyone elses "stats" on college confidential, most of these ppl are the best of the best and others are here for desperate help...now don't get me wrong there are ppl that are if i may say "avg" and visit the site here and there...so yea once again you have a great shot and worry about your own stats and academic progress rather than college confidential's posters...

Your chances for Brown look pretty good and sounds like it would be a good fit for you too, but it's a big mistake not to have some back up schools in mind. No Ivy school is a sure thing for anyone who isn't the fairly bright child of a rich and famous alumnus. In New England consider Wesleyan, Williams, Brandeis, Tufts,... or outside that region--Northwestern, Washington U, Emory U, Haverford...

If ED works out for you, then you can forget about all those othe places.

Also, with many cases that I've seen on this board, not everything posted is true. There's no gurantee, so the only thing telling you that "these are really my stats" is coming from the person posting the thread.

I didn't know that Brown wanted the new SAT, bah. I'll contact them about it.

I also plan on possibly applying to Wesleyan. I don't know where else, my heart is very set on Brown. :( I plan on making it clear to them that they are my first choice; I mean, I'll be applying early decision, so they'll have to know how much it means to me.

crosses fingers

And by "no backup schools", I mean that I can't think of anywhere else to go. I will apply early decision, so if I'm rejected, I'll have to apply other places, I suppose. Baaaah.

I agree about the Old SAT + writing , but Yale, for example, says only the NEW is acceptable and I could guess that Brown wouldn't want to be seen as "less demanding".

Just call the admissions office. They'll be more than happy to talk about applying.

I think if you apply ED, and then send in a little supplimetal essay outside of any of the required ones that says something about why you've always loved Brown and why you think it's perfect for you, your chances will be quite high.
If you're studying for AP tests, and think you'll do well on them, you should have your junior-year AP tests sent to Brown. That will impress them.

I sent the Admisisions office an e-mail and got the answer "we require the new SAT"--with no further elaboration. We will be at Brown in March and I will try to follow this up since my daughter took Old SAT + SAT II writing as well.

fids - I don't want to discourage you because it sounds like you're on the right track and Brown should certainly want you. On the other hand, they can't take everyone with your record, or their school would burst at the seams. Have back up schools. This is the best advice - and find one that you'd enjoy attending.
My daughter was accepted to Amherst, Bowdoin, Carleton, Middlebury, Swarthmore, Williams, and Yale, but was waitlisted at Brown. Don't make the mistake of putting all your eggs in one basket. There are no sure bets in college admissions.

Hahaha, I have called up the Brown admissions office twice already. I want to see enthusiastic about the school, but definitely not like a pest. I checked out their website and didn't see anything about requiring the new SAT, but maybe I missed it. I'll keep searching, though.

ASAP, I definitely see what you're saying, but hopefully it will be different for me because I am applying ED. Ack, I really hope so at least.
