Brown Class of 2018 Early Decision Applicants

Hey Class of 2018 ED applicants! My name is Maggie and I’m a reporter for The Brown Daily Herald. I was wondering if any of you would be willing to be interviewed for an article I am writing. I’m trying to get opinions of various Brown applicants about why they’re applying and what attracted them to Brown. Email me at margaret_livingstone@brown.edu if you’re interested!

I’m applying! I’m from California :)

I’m from Singapore and I’m applying ED! OMG. How does one get I to this stellar college seriously?

What! donaldb040, you changed your mind?

i’m applying ED to PLME

I’m applying ED. I was going to apply across the board reg decision to a bunch of places but when I visited Brown it was magical.

Goddess of Brown University, I offer you my sacrifices. Please take me into your wonderful embrace

Applying RD, not ED, but I have a question on the supplement. For the “Some schools offer students the opportunity to take national exams in areas such as math and language. These exams include, but are not limited to, AIME, AMC 10, Le Grand Concours, National Spanish Exam, National Latin Exams. If you have taken any of these exams (or any other subject-based national or international examinations), please inform us of the exams and scores you find most meaningful” section, should I include SAT subject tests? They technically are subject-based exams but it would be included in another part of the application…

No, they don’t mean the SATII’s. Those will be in another section and sent to the college already. Read the examples, if they wanted this section for SATII they would say so.

Hi all! I am applying ED and would like any feedback as to whether or not I’ll get in. It is the only Ivy I am applying for (also applying to Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, USC, UCLA, Tulane, U of I, Loyola, Marquette) but I am nervous about my chances. I’m going to be completely honest about my app so I’d like a truthful answer as to whether or not I’ll be accepted/defered/waitlisted/denied. Don’t mind my feelings! Here goes: Act: 27 with a 10 on writing (did not take SAT). GPA: 3.3. Am not in top 25% of my class but I have taken 9 AP courses throughout high school and did well on the exams. I do think my essays/interview will be the highlight of my application because of my ability to write well/the stories I have to convey. I have medical conditions that OBVIOUSLY affected my GPA, and I believe that Brown will see past the numbers and see me as a person. I am also a girl from a public high school in Chicago if that helps. I have been on 3 different varsity sports, been the president of over a dozen clubs, tons of service hours, I have a job outside of school, and 3 other siblings! I applied as Biology (1st) and Archeology (2nd). THANKS AGAIN for the help!

Hey guys… What are your SAT scores?

@10thWeasley: a combination of 3.3 GPA and 27ACT makes you completely not viable given the competitive nature of the Brown applicant pool

That same medical condition would also affect your ability to complete the workload at Brown and to do OK on the tests. The vast majority of the students who get accepted to Brown are in the top one percent in the country in academic ability. Why would you even want to stress yourself out trying to keep pace with this group, given your medical handicap? It would be like trying to run a marathon on crutches!

@10th- Tell your story in your essay and find that thing that makes you stand out since writing is your strength, and let no one convince you that your chances are less because of a medical condition. Brown has a holistic process when viewing applications and your chances of getting in are the same as the next applicant. It just depends on what the Adcoms are looking for to enrich the student body.
Good Luck

Hey guys. I was wondering what you thought about my chances of getting into Brown. Im from Harrisburg, PA applying ED. 4.0+ weighted GPA, taken all but 3 AP classes offered at my school. 1950 SAT 29 ACT. Member of numerous clubs and Vice Pres. of United Way Allocations Panel in Harrisburg, PA, which raised $14,000 dollars last year to assist underprivileged children in the central PA region. Played 3 varsity sports, 5 letters thus far. I also have begun working on two startup, online companies. I have several D1 scholarship offers thus far but would rather try to get into brown and be a walk on. Also applying to Penn State, Delaware, Pitt, Tulane, Fordham and Northwestern. I know my scores are by no means stellar but I think my essay and extracurriculars are pretty good. Any feedback would be great! Thanks!

Who cares what we say you’ll know in two months!

How much does applying ED to Brown increase your chances of getting in? Would it be worth it to apply ED if it meant rushing my supplements?

@bKessler: If you’re considering D1 scholarships, you should DEFINITELY contact the coach of your sport at Brown (and everywhere else you’re applying). Ply this unique feature – it may fulfill a need at Brown and can be of great help

@10thWeasley I say go for it. Schools really do look at more than just grades when they assess your application. I don’t think you having a medical condition will count against you. And a 3.3 GPA isn’t great but its not unforgivable (my thoughts).

First time posting!

I have a question: How forgiving is Brown (or other competitive colleges) about grade slips? I got a C in AP Calc (first time even coming close to a C!) junior year. I was extremely sick that whole semester and thought it was just colds/allergies but it turns out that my sinuses were all extremely infected and I ended up getting surgery for it. I retook the class the following semester and I got over a 100 in the class.

I know that colleges look for improvement and the second part of my junior year I got over 96 in all my classes. I’m working hard to keep my grades high senior year as well. Will that C be a hindrance even if I retook the class? (Keep in mind that none of my other grades are like this)
