Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common app: 10/10 displayed creativity, good problem solving skills, and wit - really reflected the spunky Brown-like personality that she has. She is also a very good writer - so her essays are impressive and enjoyable to read
Why Brown - 9/10 again very spunky and demonstrated that she “knew” Brown well
Where do you live - 10/10 - endearing poem - specific to Brown
Supplemental - included quirky hand written creative writing piece that demonstrated her fun-loving yet intellectual side

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1:10/10 from her favorite AP English teacher who also loved Brown - probably effusive
Teacher Rec #2: 9/10 from her least favorite AP Chem teacher but who had offered to write the letter for her and represented a left-brain (science) perspective - probably complimentary but not effusive
Counselor Rec: 10/10 she got to know her counselor well and provided her with information prior to the summer before senior year so her counselor was able to draft the rec letter over the summer before the counselor was inundated with other letters to write in the fall - also her counselor was similar in personality to my daughter so they related well
Additional Rec: 15/10!!! incredibly strong letter of rec from her ivy league summer internship boss - used words like “meticulous”, etc… I think this was a key factor in her acceptance
Interview: 10/10

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?:yes
Intended Major: undecided
State (if domestic applicant): 20-25 of admits accepted from her state
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Income Bracket:Both parents work
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection:
Strengths: Her numbers were strong but she had no hook. I think the strength of her writing and the carefree Brown-like personality that came through in all written materials along with strong letters of recommendation were bigest strengths
Weaknesses: No hook.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I: Didn’t take
ACT: 35; 36 english 36 reading 35 math 34 science 10 essay
SAT II:
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): school doesn’t report unweighted; 4.07 weighted
Rank: 5/500, but my school doesn’t report rank. Brown could have asked for it though, in which case my school would have told them.
AP: English Language and Composition(5), Physics 1 (3), APUSH (4)
IB (place score in parenthesis):
Senior Year Course Load: AP Psych, AP Literature and Composition, AP us gov, AP Spanish, World Conflicts, Calc
Major Awards:

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

Newspaper (Humor Columnist)
Orientation Leader for incoming freshmen

Job/Work Experience:
2 years at local historic cemetery, wrote content for blogs, did archival work etc

Summer Activities:

Essays (rating 1-10, details):
Common app: 9/10; wrote about my love for vampire weekend (lol) and how it relates to religion (kind of weird but unique. Writing is a strength so hopefully that came through)
Why Brown - 9/10; wrote about how my friend who goes to Brown embodies the spirit of the school. It was simple but genuine and sweet, and i think that came across.
Where do you live - I live in a really diverse, vibrant community so the essay kind of wrote itself. Talked about a guy who drums in the park next to my house and how that “soundtracks” my life. It was lame but conveyed what i wanted it to.
Supplemental - nada

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):
Teacher Rec #1: 8/10 AP English teacher who is also my yearbook advisor this year, IDK if she likes me personally (lol) but she thinks im a great writer and she loved my class.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10 from my APUSH teacher. I didn’t like him as a teacher but we had a good rapport and I was a top student in his clas. He read me my letter (oops) and it was really complimentary.
Counselor Rec: 8/10 There are like 500 kids in my grade (2400 in the whole school) and 4 counselors. I tried to make as personal a connection as possible and she liked me, but we only met a few times. It likely just put me in the context of the school and noted that I was a top student (we don’t report rank).
Interview: 8/10. I had two interviews (one for Kenyon, one for Brown) and the Brown one definitely wasn’t as personal, but I think I still came off as super enthusiastic. The guy was really nice and told me i would “be a great fit for brown.” I had good answers and questions and did everything i needed to, it just wasn’t particularly personal. But it went well apparently!

Other:
Applied for Financial Aid?:yes
Intended Major: not really sure, but I think I indicated English, Art History, and American Studies.
State (if domestic applicant): PA, a lot of people go from schools in my area (philly)
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public (2400 students, we have no money and colleges know that. 1-2 people usually go to brown every year, and a ton to other ivies.)
Ethnicity: White
Gender: F
Income Bracket: 130k
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection:
Strengths: My test score was very high which i think helped me be considered, and after that I think my personal qualities really helped. My teacher recs probably made me look really good, and my essay didn’t sound like a college essay, it just sounded like me talking about something I love. Same thing with my supplements. Also, it probably helped that I go to a well-regarded public school that brown knows.
Weaknesses: no real hook or continuity across my app. pretty standard applicant, but apparently they saw something special in me and im really glad they did!!!
General advice: I had no idea I was going to get in, and there are a million other people as qualified and deserving as me that could have gotten in but didn’t. Once you have the grades and scores, it’s all about being genuine, enthusiastic, and down-to-earth. I’m so humbled to be part of such an incredible group of people, and SO EXCITED!!!
