Brown Class of 2023 Applicants Discussion

@PianoWinterfell I think everyone takes their best shot as essays, but it’s impossible to know how schools receive them. So reportedly stellar essays may be something less. I sure hope we never come to the point where people start posting their essays for mass evaluation! Similarly, applicants don’t get to see their LORs. What teacher is going to tell a family that they wrote an honest, fair recommendation that may not be as good as the family expects?

Technically speaking, referring to what @PianoWinterfell said, the Grades and Test Scores matter only to a level and arent something that’ll make an app instantly desirable.

How the LOR’s and essays are received are subjective.

Regarding the Presidential Scholars nominee, it counts as a big thing, but the official results are released much later after decisions, and a nominee isnt weighted in as well (however less people get to that level in a particular US state) IMO. Also, which state was the app nominated from matters too. A densely populated one, or a very close knit one?

Legacy from Princeton weighs only for Princeton, but ever so slightly, and a competitive alpine ski racer, though given a very very unique thing, doesnt matter as much if there are no awards (notional or international) at hand. THe best use for it in an app is in the ‘unique perspectives’ in essays. Listing it as a yearly activity or something doesnt differentiate it just as uniquely as the many different activities, all right and passionately pursued in their own accord. In this best case (provided no intl, nat. awards), one very unique essay doesnt help the student in itself cross the side. A competitive alpine skier has implications of competitiveness, and it not just being a past-time thing (which is again, valid and very much valued still), but without any “success” defined by awards/medals/record-breaks (at any level or type).

Hence, it all comes down to how well the app fits in the class vision as decided by the adcom (given you’re academically capable, which most apps are)…

Hope this helps.

I agree with @MyGPAIsAnL @NMParent000079 and @KWSoCal with all that they’re sayin’ too. It aids what I’m tryna say.

No single thing gets you in, but a single item can keep you out.

I just received the email which you have received two weeks ago. Which states that decisions at 7pm 3/28. That’s too strange. Maybe because I’m a deferred ED applicant.

I received that email today, but most people received it on March 14th, which is strange…Not an ED applicant btw

Im starting to think if it means something. (Mostly not, idk)

Many of my friends still didnt get one.

Hmmmm…

I got that email on 3/14. Deferred ED

I got that email on 3/14. RD Applicant

@TheGuy1 Mind sharing your theory on the timing of the email? I received mine on 3/14 (RD applicant). Is that good or bad?

@RFM1617 I have no clue of the correlation with the timing, but maybe the list of applicants could be ordered/ranked/stacked in some way based on some criteria, leading to individual sends to each inbox. Thats the best I can think of.

Hope this helps.

Maybe its not true, since this is analyzing every small step to the tiniest detail, but well, its a thought

receiced it today, international, rd, first name M, family name L

If it helps to determine the pattern, I did get a financial doc processed by Brown yesterday. Idk if that’ll help but that’s more food for thought I guess

There is none.

hmmm thats weird. i thought everyone got the email on the same day

@ashley_2023 that looks like a good sign

There’s a discussion on the Dartmouth RD apps 2023 Forum regarding FA signs and contacts.

Refer to that if you want to but let me summarize it:

  1. FA will contact u if additional data is needed to make a FinAid estimate. This is disregarding your admissions status, as in most cases, the FA office works in parallel with the AdCom.
  2. It could go on either way on decision day, considering that all decisions finalize a few days before the decision date.
  3. Processing a document (specifically to this case) means what I said in point 1, and only matters on personal financial circumstance.
  4. The best assumption, if at all, is that ure not out this late in the game, but there might be none at all.

Thats all.

for brown if you look at the past two years in CC discussions, you can see that if you have a long list of financial aid documents in your brown financial aid portal other than CSS and FAFSA, ur probably in

Again, this is something @skieurope can back me up on.

It doesnt matter, and its really pertaining to personal circumstance. Refer to my previous statement.

A kid from my school got in ED only with CSS and FAFSA on there, and I specifically asked her to show her portal to me for this disparity. Same with past years incidents.

This applies to all schools, but I have had experiences with 4-5 like these.

@TheGuy1 Any possible signs/theories regarding why some received the email 2 weeks ago and others received it yesterday?

I don’t normally read tea leaves but this is quite strange
