How does the dining experience with Brown College work? It sounds fun, but with everyone's schedules and preferences being different, how does it work that we get together for a few meals per week?
Also, I realize it is the residential meal plan, but can I eat anywhere I want to? Like if I have a friend at the old dorms and want to eat at O.H. can I?? Or am I limited in some way??
Lastly, I'm confused by the courses offered at BC. I got a recent e-mail from a Brown rep., that was over my head talking about various options, and "they might be listed on COD by now"........The courses seemed quirky, but really interesting and unique. At orientation, I'd rather register for conservative first year classes for Fall semester so that I'm not overwhelmed as I acclimate to Virginia (I'm OOS). I guess I kind of thought that the BC courses were something that one pursued in their leisure time, and enjoyed with BC people and the faculty there. I was surprised to see that these courses were to be posted on the COD.
I guess that's it. I'm looking so forward to August!! Hey, can I actually see a room in BC when I come for orientation?

I personally don't know how it works for the special meals and banquets, but there should not be any hindrance from you eating at O-Hill and Runk. I say try a Brown class since its a 75% chance of not getting all the classes you want. Think of it as a USEM, but good.

I think there is a display room at Brown. I haven't seen a sign about when walking to the Pav today.

Thanks UVAMalex, but I don't know what a USEM is?

Its a university seminar. Basically a low credit hour lecture with usually limited amount of homework that doesn't really count for anything in particular. That is, no degree requires one and its not a prereq of anything. They are just interesting classes about topics you like. Take it if it intrigues you.

I am looking at USEM 180(maybe its 181) "Quantum Theory and Consciousness." Supposedly they dont put a huge damper on your time in general, but some royally suck.

University Seminar which is a two-credit class in many different subjects available to new students in their first two semesters. Some can be easy and others harder than necessary. Taking one USEM is like another "rite of passage" at UVA.

" I say try a Brown class since its a 75% chance of not getting all the classes you want. Think of it as a USEM, but good.UVAMalex,"

You say "think of it as a USEM, but good"--in reference to the BC courses. So, are these in a different league or sign up area? Only available to BC students?
How and where do I sign up a "Brown Class"?
Sorry to be dense, but orientation is coming up soon and I want to be as prepared as I can be.

I was making a joke about some USEM's are not quality. I thought you can just register for the classes like any other class. The Brownies would be a more helpful source.

all USEM's aren't 2 hours. Some are 1 CH, some are 3 CH (0_0).

Which furthers the warning that some are easier than others.

You will find out that most people have lunch at the same time... Have you seen how many classes are offered 11-12? Most people head over to Newcomb at 12 and there are LONG lines. What you are now about to find out is that if you are Brownie you can cut in line and swipe yourself in on our $900 swipe machine and then sit in our special room and get in and out faster. Pretty much... Amazing. Except when the swipe machine broke 2x last yr... But some of the ladies who swipe in the long lines will swipe you in anyways XD Anyways you're under no obligation to eat with us, and anyone who is not in Brown can eat with us too... I frequently swipe friends in with my extra meals to avoid the lines and make them eat me with - case in point Malex has eaten with me in the Brown room before with the other CAINE members.

The courses are typically attended by Brown College students, but I think they're open to everyone? In the spring Brown residents can teach courses (I'm not sure how it works in the fall). However, if no one has told you yet, there is a required Brown class, INST 274 (1 credit), for 1st yr Brownies. They offer it at 2 different times but you HAVE to take the class so you need to plan your schedule accordingly. It may not let you register for it yet but once ISIS opens up you will need to add yourself in. The other courses... some are intense others are ridiculous. If it's interesting: well, this is college, at least attend the first class and see if it seems interesting, you know?

Somehow one of the 1st yrs last yr got to see a room over orientation, so if you email your FYLs they might be able to set that up. Otherwise, I can send you links to what the rooms look like. PM me and I will give you a link to my facebook where I know I have pictures of my room up.
