Brown College?

I've been looking around at the residential colleges, and Brown College seems really attractive to me. I've glanced at the application, so I know kind of what it offers, but I'm still interested to know more. What are the dorms like? The social scene there? The classes (I don't really understand this bit - can only Brown College students take them)? Would I miss anything by living in that community as a first-year rather than in the Old Dorms or somewhere else? I'm a writer and actress, so the zany creativity really appealed to me - but do they take enough first-year students for me to even bother applying?

If any current Brown College students could share their perspectives, I'd be quite happy!

There are a bunch of threads on this. If you search you’ll get more details. Quickly:

The dorms are divided into portals, or buildings, with underground tunnels/hallways connecting them all with lounges interspersed. The rooms are connected to a bathroom, 4-8 people per bathroom, with rooms being doubles, better described as singles with one door in to both room and one door in to the bathroom. There is an outside room which connects to the portal stairway, and an inner room which connects to the bathroom.

Social scene is varied, artsy, nerdy, normal. There are a few republicans and greek (frat/sorority), not very many… We do cool things, like social dances, and weird things, like playing with legos and reenacting gladiator… Artsy things like outdoor movies, nerdy things like video games and hogwarts games (wizard chess, quidditch).

Classes are mixed, and usually composed of all if not mostly Brownies. Some are required seminars for first years, some are taught by students who live in Brown, some are taught by faculty affiliated with brown.

I’ve posted about first year dorms vs brown before, search on that.

Odds are better applying as a first year than an upperclassman. Definitely apply. Best of luck and feel free to reply back with more questions, though I might tell you to search first :)

I actually did search before I made this thread and I didn’t turn up anything relevant…I don’t know what I did, though, because I just searched again and I saw the posts you were talking about! Thanks again, though, for taking the time to post even though my questions had already been asked. Much appreciated! You’ve been very helpful.
