Brown: Diversity?

I’ve been hearing so many different things about this school. I’m a conservative Christian who’s very open minded and likes meeting people who are different from me. However, I do want to have some friends who share the same beliefs as me. Can I find that at Brown?

Probably, but you may be more comfortable at a more conservative school like Wake Forest, Duke, Colgate, Bucknell, Washington & Lee or better yet the Catholic schools like ND, BC, Holy Cross or Villanova. These would be more in the middle even as religious institutions.

Actually, there is a thriving group of evangelical Christians (i.e. born again types) at Brown, according to a good friend of mine who went there. I recommend contacting the Sanctuary Church in downtown Providence. It caters to kids at RISD, Brown, URI, etc. Good luck.

My dad had a catholic girl the first year in the substance free dorms and it was no problem for her, a liberal atheist. Religion just isn’t something that would occur to her to being up I don’t think. Certainly you will find many friends who do not share the same beliefs. However there is a preponderance of Christians in the country so they will also be many at brown. There are organized religious groups for every persuasion with social events. As for being conservative that would be less of the student body, although a minority there will be many that can thrive there. I think immersion in the intense academic enviro is more of a bond between students.

What do you mean by “conservative” Christian? There are plenty of people who are very open about their faith at Brown, and it’s a very welcoming community. I know plenty of practicing Catholics, some orthodox Jews, LDS Mormons, etc. Sounds like you’d be just fine at Brown.

I’m not understanding this. Was the girl Catholic or an atheist? And what was no problem for who?
