Has any one been contacted about having an interview with an alum or someone from Brown?
Do you know what type of stuff they like to ask/talk about?
I was emailed this morning by an alum in my area and so Im so nervouss!

Ilurvebrown, how long after you got your confirmsthupb email from brown did you get your interview email? That's awesome! I hope I get one!!!

I haven't gotten my ID/Password email from Brown yet! :S
Only the email from the alumni interviewer...

I've got my ID and password just no email yet from Alumni!

^same here.

This has been addressed in many previous posts but basically don't sweat the interview. the interview is really meant to "give a face to the university". It is your opportunity to ask questions and find out about where you might be spending the next 4 years of your life. My son's interview occurred in the local public library. The alum asked him about what he wanted to study, what extra curriculars he might like to do and then they discussed these things. They talked about Providence and some of the things my son was doing in high school. It wasn't a grilling, nor was it formal. Many students say they meet in Starbucks and low key places like that. Have a list of some questions you might like answers to and just be yourself. The alums will be contacting you soon if there is one in the area. It does not have much bearing on admission and if you don't get an interview (because there may not be an alum in every area) don't sweat it.

is it weird that i really want an interview! like so badly. ahh, i'm afraid i won't get one.

I really want one too. I really want to have fun in mine!
And I have the same situation - email, yes; interview, no (so far :()

I had my interview at 11 this morning. The dude was a peppy trial lawyer from the class of 81. We had coffee and it took 50 minutes, but totally could have gone on longer if we both didn't have to leave by 12. He and I got along swimmingly; I hope this will help me!

Gaaaah I'm so relieved.

hollyert: what questions did he ask you if you don't mind me asking?

Sak09: It was just a really fluid conversation, but he did ask about why I'm applying to Brown, how I feel about the open curriculum, how I compared Brown with my other schools (I was open about where else I would apply, I figured that's OK since I am ED). He also wanted to know about my extracurriculars. But our chat also involved music, politics, living away from home, what he majored in (I asked), my boyfriend (since he's applying to MIT and my interviewer had a lot of connections at MIT), and how it is to be young and scared/excited. He was a cool guy.

So... let's pretend I was to meet an alum at a local coffeehouse. Would it be strange if I bought him or her coffee?

Daily pursuit: My interviewer offered to buy me coffee, but I bought my own.

aww i hope i get a cool guy like that too. what part of LA are you from? I COULD possibly get the same guy but I'm assuming there are plenty of Brown alums around here.. they just need to email me :P

Mandolive: I'm in Mt. Washington (South of Eagle Rock; almost in Pasadena). The dude's from the La Canada/Pasadena area, so we met near his work in Pasadena. I hope you do get him. He's neeto.

Ahh I'm way west at Chatsworth, near Northridge - inbetween Simi Valley and Granada Hills. Who knows though. It's good to hear you had a nice experience though - I'm anticipating mine even more now. Good luck!

I'm an interviewer, so I can give some perspective on the process.

Brown has many geographic regions, and each has an alumni in charge. This alumni goes online, and using an online interface, assigns applicants to interviewers. The site generates emails with your names and contact information to the alumni interviewer. The alumni then contacts you, the applicant.

So the question of when you are contacted, that mainly depends on how frequently the alumni in charge checks the online site, how diligent s/he is about assigning applicants to alumni, and how quickly the interviewer contacts the applicant. Some alumni check the site daily, others weekly.

The interview write-ups for ED are due by Dec. 1, so there is still plenty of time.

There is no list of questions, although there are suggested areas to ask about. Some alumni might ask structured questions (like "where do you see yourself in 5 years") and others prefer a more casual conversation. Every interview experience will be different. You shouldn't have to bring your resume or transcripts with you.

If you don't have an interview, it doesn't hurt your chances at all. But admissions reads every alumni write-up and says they are very valuable in rounding out their impressions of students.

i had my interview last sunday and it was realllly laid back. my guy told me that it was basically mostly for me to make sure that brown was the right fit for me, and his remarks would only be used for admissions as a last resort.

basically he asked me a few questions about myself, my academic interests, my extracurriculars, etc., and then i asked questions/we talked about brown for the remainder of the hour. he didn't even look at my resume

soooo dont worry :D

Wow thanks a lot for that insight fireandrain.

Fireandrain: do they choose only specific students for interviews or do all applicants have a chance to interview?
