Does anyone have any insight/information they can give into either of these concentrations besides what I’ve read from the Brown website?

The Literary Arts concentration seems really interesting, but I’ve had many people tell me that English is more “useful” or “worthwhile” in the long run, that by teaching you criticism and analysis, it’ll be better for your own writing. I have no idea. I’m not quite sure how to compare the two.

I’d like to double major/concentrate with political science; I’m not sure about future grad school or law school plans, but will a major/concentration in something like literary arts/creative writing affect post-undergrad plans in any way?

Thanks for any comments or help you might be able to give. :)

I doubt it would affect post-graduate work, especially considering the Poli Sci major.

Having taken a Literary Arts fiction seminar I can tell you that that did FAR more for my writing than any english cousre I've taken my whole life. Did it teach me analysis? Yes, but in a more useful way-- it wasnt about understanding what the author wanted you to, it wasnt even as mechanical as some of the techinque/style analysis, it was more about how to craft a story, what was magnificent about how this particular story was crafted. My professor who was a grad student, was the most critical in a useful way anyone has ever been of my writing, as was the rest of hte class.

If you want insight on creativity in your writing and would like ot develop your style I'd 100% suggest checking out Literary Arts. If you want to read more novels and analyze that work more than your own (which may lead to a betterway to analyze yourself, but why not juststart doing that from the start???) then go English.

This is my biased view.

Thanks for your response...you definitely brought up the things I was wondering about.

I've experienced a lot of analytical writing and reading through AP English, but the high school creative writing class is a joke. It didn't help me develop or polish my own writing in any way.

Literary Arts is actually one of the things that drew me to Brown, but it gets hard to follow your instinctive feelings when all the senior year app. stress and other people's well-meaning but irritating remarks starts to create doubts...anyway, I suppose I'm jumping ahead a bit. After all, English or Literary Arts aside, I have to somehow be accepted to Brown first. ;)
