Oh.my.god. $19k for somewhere to live for 9 months or so?! That’s insane! I pay ~$13,500/ year for my own apartment in a major city. Holy crap. That’s shocking.

^Yeah N.Y, in general, is beyond insane. You pay $1900 for dorms and still don’t get the “true” college experience. Regardless, NYU is a good school, so I guess things don’t have to be PERFECT… However, Brown just happens to have it all!!!

NYU is a great school for sure. I’ve had friends transfer out of it due to finances. You know I might be in the minority on this one but I’ve always kind of liked the fact that there is no “true college experience” there. It’s oddly appealing, haha.

Speaking of living on campus…do you know how hard it is to get permission to live off campus? I know you have to get a waiver and all of that. I can’t live on campus.

@okmj1!n, Lobzz, etc

I pay about 10k for dorms, but at least they are new. I could spend 8k a year on nearby apartments, but they are too old, grimy and have their own problems

@TheGoldFinch

I met a girl who transferred to Brown last year. She is living off campus with family to save on costs. It seems like they make you jump through a couple of hoops, but is doable. However, Brown is a residential college. There is a “non-resident-fee”

for more info: [Residential Life: Off Campus Living @ Brown](http://reslife.brown.edu/offcampus/index.html)

I am transferring from a commuter college, so I am actually very excited about the “residential” aspects.

Oh okay, that’s good to know. I read through all of their info before but it seemed fairly ambiguous as to how plausible it actually is. If I get accepted, I will be moving out East from the West Coast with a boyfriend, dog, and cat in tow. For some reason I doubt Brown will let me keep all three in a dorm with me, hahah.

^ I’m afraid the cat, the dog, and the boyfriend will have to go; I don’t think you can actually take them with you. lol

…or you could just live off campus… but then you’d be missing out on Brown :(

Hahah, I’m not sure any of them would be too pleased with that idea. I would absolutely love to live on campus though. Do you think I could hide them all under my bed? Maybe I can get a loft and just put a huge sheet over the side so no one could ever see them. Genius! I think I am still left with the sole option of living off campus. Hopefully I could get a place right next to Brown, be on campus all the time, and pretend like I’m a resident anyways.

I am a bit nervous that it would be harder to make friends like this. I’ll take this opportunity to invite any and all of you in this lovely thread to be my Brown bffs. I like long walks on the beach, jumping in puddles, and laying on the grass on a sunny day. Any takers? How about you, Lobzz? I promise I don’t bite.

Brown’s administration has indicated recently that they are commited to makeing the college more transfer friendly. I think that will extend into student and res life.

The friend I indicated earlier who transfered and is living off campus seems to be doing really. She recommends just getting invovled in everything in the start of the year, you’ll meet tons of people and wiggle your way into many social circles.

I wish the notifications are in the mail and will arrive tomorrow. That is how my brain is thinking, I want to get into brown and start making plans! But then I remember that I still need to wait a month :/

That’s really great to hear about your friend. Some schools are much more commuter friendly than others. I’m glad that Brown falls into that category.

Ugh, I know exactly how you feel. I am getting way too antsy for my own good. I have a feeling that come early-May I’ll be checking the website 273498 times a day (and yes, that is an accurate figure :p).

Yeah I have been regularly visiting CC to distract me from studying for my finals Only a few more weeks to go!

anyone know when we hear from brown?

The website says “Mid May” so nobody will know an exact date. A logical follow-up question: When did they notify applicants last year?

I posted this earlier in this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1064590609-post348.html

TheGoldFinch, if both of us end up at Brown next year (or any other year; I’m applying til’ I get in. lol), I will be more than happy to be your friend Long walks on the beach sound terrific, but if you ever jump in a puddle and cover me in filthy water, I can pretty much guarantee that you will be sipping your dinners through stripped straws at Brown. loool kidding!

Hahahaha, I like you.

Are you applying as a sophomore then? Sorry if you’ve said this before. I was thinking that if I don’t get in as a transfer (which I probably won’t), that I’ll probably apply for grad school at Brown.

I wish there were interviews for transfers, haha. I didn’t apply to competitive schools out of high school, and I’ve never been on a “college interview”. Seems like one of those experiences I’d like to have.

^ The only school I had an interview with as a transfer applicant was U. Chicago. Over the phone. It lasted only 7 minutes :/.

Yeah, I’m currently a freshman. And no, I doubt I’ll be going to grad school. I’m definitely going to “design” my own major by combining Econ and urban studies.

And I like you, too.

Glad you two like each other ;p

so who is a sophomore transfer, and who is a junior transfer?

I’ll start: I will be a junior transfer.
