Brown Fall 2010 Transfer Thread

so you are transfer for junior standing? then…i thought SAT isn’t that important? I heard GPA is a lot more important than SAT for junior transfer. idk…where are you transferring from?
also, just out of curiosity, will the prestige or ranking of your current college help in anyway?

is it possible to get into brown from a tier 3 university?

@mouse

Yeah, I’m transferring for Junior standing. Why did you think SAT isn’t that important? They ask for it and say it’s a factor in admission, so I felt like it was important to get a score within their range. Certainly can’t hurt. I’m transferring from UCR. The prestige of my university won’t help, because it’s not prestigious.

@jayCobbs

Definitely. However, you’ve got more to prove, so I feel like it’s a good idea to have an SAT score in the school’s range.

ahh…just checked, my old SAT is in their range…:slight_smile:
yeah, i think what i was asking is if i am already in a Top 15 college, would it be an advantage when applying to transfer to Brown (with a 4.0 GPA)?

@mouse

It can only help, I imagine.

I am currently applying to Georgetown, NYU, Columbia, and Cornell as a junior transfer. Knowing my stats below do you think I have a good shot at brown?

  • 3.75 at UCSB in a double major of Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting and Political Science.
  • Applying for Political Science or Goverment when transferring
    -Internships with Deloitte, Wells Fargo and Wachovia.
    -Researcher for a NSF 5 year project emphasized on the internets impact of social movements and political protests.
  • Head of University Misconduct in the Office of the Student Advocate. Those not familiar with this department, it helps students defend their cases when charged with violations i.e. cheating. It also helps mediate any situation that a student may have encountered with authorities at UCSB.
    -Part of a Political Science research team focused on the impacts of Facebook when it comes to political knowledge v political participation.
    -There are plenty of other things I have done, but these are the main ones.

My high school GPA is a weighted 4.0 while taking 6 AP classes. My SAT is a 1980 (Math 720 Writing 680 Reading 580), SAT II BIO 790 and SAT II MATH 720. My ACT score is a 30.

Also, I am looking to take my next two quarters off to go for a self-discovery experience. I am going to be in a Global Peace Corps program known as Buddhist Immersion. Here I will be teaching English to children and monks who wish to become multilingual lectures across the globe. I will also be attending many mediation retreats and living in the monastery.

Are you asking for financial aid?

no, that is not needed

Um…I don’t know. No one here knows, haha. If you feel like your reasons for wanting Brown are well articulated, and you really are a great fit with the school then your shot is probably decent. As far as stats, your GPA is probably good but the SAT scores are a bit below their range. As a junior transfer that might not matter as much. That’s all I can give ya.

Haha, yeah I’m getting the sense that no one really knows anymore because there is a lot of luck involved… my sat scores are low due to a disability that will be a part of one of my essays so i should be covered on that. thanks for the advice

Seriously, Brown transfer admission definitely feels like it’s a crap shot…

Is anyone else planning to send the SAT Reasoning but not subject tests? I have a good reasoning score but can’t for the life of me bring myself to retake the subject tests. I just want to know I’m not the only person doing this, haha.

Does being a potential Physics major make you a better or worse candidate for transfer?

Neither.

Damn, I just submitted my application (early I know, but I wanted to finish before school started up again) and I realized I forgot to underline the title of a book in my essay! Silly mistake. I doubt it will matter, but it still bugs me.

@SmithGirl,

Brown wants you be a fit for your major. You need to explain why you are a physics major, and make them want you as a physics major.

It would not surprise me if one’s major is empirically taken into consideration. However your commitment to, interest in, and passion for your major is so much more important! You should never worry about whether or not your major appeals to Brown. (Besides, it is a crapshoot anyways.)

I already submitted my application too and I am hoping I didn’t miss anything.

I was waitlisted last year when applying as a high school senior but I was so angry I never pursued it and now I greatly regret that. I am at Carnegie Mellon University now and have a 4.0, 34 ACT and a very in-depth activities resume. I am applying as an english major and I hope I get it. It’s truly where I want to be.

But I was wondering (I know the website says you need a year of college before coming to brown) if there were any way of getting into the spring semester with the freshman class. I know its a long shot and I don’t want to harass them, but I really just can’t be at Carnegie Mellon anymore. Does having been waitlisted make a difference? Does anyone know of any student who transferred in spring of freshman year?

@roo,

Being previously waitlisted bodes well for you, however there is no way to get in before the spring semester starts. They will not be looking at the transfer applications until at least March.

it’s making me nervous now that so many people have submitted their applications already…when i have just started…

mouse9029- don’t worry about not having the app in yet. I don’t either. It actually says on the Brown website that they don’t want applications until after January 15 because of all the freshman applicants. Also, I was wondering why you are considering leaving Wash U. (I have a friend who wants to transfer there)
