Brown Fall 2010 Transfer Thread

how does brown feel about extra LORs? I want to send in 2 more, one from a research mentor at columbia med school, and the other from my employer at a health clinic. i think that bother letters will be very, very good, but I don’t know how favorably brown would see them, because the website doesn’t mention anything about extra LORs.

@Smith Girl:
the only reason is that i hate St. Louis very much. I actually loved my first semester at Wash U. It’s a really good college, if not one of the best ones (academic-wise anyway). so if your friend doesn’t mind the bleak location of Wash U, it’s a really great school and it’s pretty transfer-friendly.

I’m applying to Brown as a freshman, for sophomore admission. I currently attend a liberal arts school in Massachusetts.
My stats so far (though I’ve only had one semester) are:

GPA: 3.83, hard course load.
High School GPA: 3.95
ACT Score: 31
SAT 2 Scores: 760, 740.
Good letters of Recommendation, Solid ECs.

What are my chances? I know my ACT score isn’t exactly stellar but would it be much use to retake it now? Is that something they would even consider?

I really want to go to Brown, and I’m wondering if there is any advice you all could give! Thanks!

hi, I am an international transfer asking for financial aid from brown, is it almost impossible? thanks.

B is need-aware for transfer admissions and it states that it has limited FA for both transfers and Intl. students.

what are my chances at Brown if i write my essay on how my gardes are significantly improving? I am a sophmore transfer with mostly 200 and 300 level honors courses. very few introductory and 100 level courses and excellent prof. recommendations

HS GPA: 3.3
GPA at Miami University (OH): 3.7
ACT: 26

my ec’s include about 100 volunteer hours, captain of hs varsity football team, accounting team in high school , i placed in the top ten at the annual district wide competition. i’ve also had many jobs.

my first semester of college i took 20 credit hours, which is the max at Miami and am taking 18 or 21 second semester given i can get permission for excess hours.

I know my credentials arent that good, but just want to know my chances.
Thanks

you should really try to get your GPA as close to as 4.0 as possible. The admission guy that I met when I visited said that college record is the most important part of the application.

bump
(10char)

Sent in all my materials to Brown! I hope we get log-in info soon.

ALREADY?! You’re ridiculous.

Well, I got denied last year, so I got really motivated to get my application together early, haha.

wow, some of you guys already submitted? I barely looked at the supplement… Right now I’m focused on making sure that everything extra (LORS, SSRs, transcripts, extra LORs, abstracts, etc) are handed in on time. How does brown feel about international transfers that will not be asking for FA (and have the money to pay completely out of pocket)?

Well, I don’t know about Brown, but I consider them lucky bastards.

I’m sure Brown views them positively…why would they not like full pay international students?

arcade, post your stats :)

I’ve got a 4.0 from a community college in California, but WILL be applying for financial aid, and just took my SATs last week. Expecting a little over a 2000.

okey dokes. I’m applying for junior transfer (sophomore right now). I’ve got a 3.96 GPA from UC Riverside and a 2260 on the SAT’s. Unfortunately, I’d need a lot of financial aid since my family income is below 40,000.

impressive stuff. Your pretty close me actually. And I’m with you on that financial aid thing, my family makes just about on the 40,000 mark. Good luck!

This year I was rejected ED for Brown- if I go somewhere else for a year and attempt to transfer will they look at the previous denial as a negative, even if I do well my freshman year?

no, just keep in mind they denied you for a reason. whatever you lacked or things you need to improve on, i would concentrate on in college.

I know why I got denied- my GPA. Thank you for answering, I was wondering if they would hold it against me. I’ll try every year until I’m 70 to get to Brown :P
