Brown, for a kid with a story...

ACADEMICS:

-GPA=3.6 unweighted; 4.2 weighted (I have a drastic upward improvement curve)
-SAT 1950 (I'm a junior and have not studied yet, so this will improve a lot)
-I qualified for CSF scholarship, but moved out of state (CA -> UT)
-Honor roll
-9 AP's, and many others are honors.

EC's:

-Cross Country 3 years, "MVP", varsity.
-Track 4 years. 1600m, 800m, long jump, varsity.
-Fluent in French. I have Corsican + Persian + American ethnicity
-French club 2 years. (president)
-FBLA club 2 years. (officer)

I educated a 9 year old autistic child for a year on my own time twice a week. I taught him how to speak correctly, write, think and express himself. Over the year, his family saw improvement, and I am very proud of this. In my essay I want to compare his obsessions with an elaborate train-set he built, to my obsessions of constantly thinking of how I could better teach him during my daily life, and then connect this to my new-found desire to major in cognitive science.

This summer I plan on going to Ghana and helping for a few weeks over there. I will take pictures with my dSLR and create a portfolio/story and maybe get a scholarship.

My GPA is low because my family (single mom, father committed suicide) went through a financial crisis and we were homeless for a while. Sometimes I did my homework in our car full of newspapers, where I would then sleep. Other times we would have to sleep in a friend's house for months. I had to spend my junior year in Utah, and arrived after the school year started, where I knew no one and had to adjust, but this is where my grades transformed.

I have a clear upward curve: straight A's junior and senior year, from B's and C's the other 2 years.

I'm a junior and plan on keeping the A's and the upward curve. I will definitely bring my SAT up to 2100 or 2200.

What are my chances at Brown. I have safeties as well...

Wow at your story, but your stats aren't that good.
Btw, why go to Ghana to help while you can save money and volunteer at a nearby orphanage?

What is up with people going to Africa to make a difference

well, I have been saving up for that trip, and I really want to go just for a personal experience.

as for the scores, i'm expecting my sat to end up around 2150. any chances for brown?

bump! chance me please!!

I think if you get a 2150 you should have a solid shot at Brown with your story

Then again, are you sure you'd be able to pay for it? I know they're pretty generous but still...

well they have good financial aid, i'll get some scholarships and grants, and the rest ill pay through loans... :/

i would also like to add as an EC, that I single-handedly made a website for someone else's product. you can see it here if you like. It's an e-commerce site.

thanks for the chance!

Yes, I think you have a fantastic chance. If you explain your story well enough and emphasize on your upward curve, you'd have a 70% chance of getting in.

I do alum interviews for Brown and I agree your chances are pretty good.

bump!
thanks everyone so far!!! any other opinions?

WOW, that is an amazing story and the exact type of person that brown will be looking for. The story makes it, regardless of your test scores, youre in. I knew a kid with a 1200/1600 on the SAT and he got into Harvard because he pulled someone out of a flaming tractor to save their life. This anecdote is just as good and your gpa is solid enough(they love upward curves). I wish you the best of luck and I will say in complete confidence that if you want to go to any of the other IVYs, they will admit you guaranteed.

i think you already chanced me but if you havent
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/635725-chance-me-i-will-chance-back.html

family tragedy didn't help me at Brown, but your story with the autistic kid is remarkable and so are your ECs. Maintain your grades and improve your SATs and you just might have a shot. Keep in mind it is Brown, though...

You certainly do have a unique case and very quality EC's (unlike everyone else who focuses on the "quantity") and I think that it will make up for your slightly lower GPA and SAT.
but to just to make sure, ace the SAT. meaning a 2100 or above.
if you do, I think you'll have a great chance!

Good Luck!

bumpp any other opinions? =]

no matter who you are (unless youve got some good connecs) brown is a reach like all ivies

What family tragedy did you have bd108? what college did you get into?
I'm just wondering how huge personal statement/extenuating circumstances plays a role in admissions
