Brown for pre-med

anyone from Brown here that can give me insights of how the pre-med in Brown is?
I'm looking to transfer there and i really want to know what the program is like.
Is there something that makes it different?

I don’t know much about Brown…but are you transferring as a junior? If so, then do you already have all your pre-med req’ts complete? If so, then I’m not sure how being at Brown will help except for advising.

Now that’s a good reason to transfer. Maybe the best I’ve seen.

Brown students have a lot of freedom to choose P/F courses. Don’t do that. You’ll want all the grades you can get if your previous UG is weak (and I have to assume it is). Do not stay. It doesn’t have to be Brown, but you need to get somewhere.

It would be just fine to mention in a sentence the school’s instability as a reason for transfer, then switch back to your love for the school you are applying to attend. Do NOT make the previous school’s instability an excuse for lack of anything EC-wise. Don’t whine. Just be matter of fact: school unstable , need to transfer, Brown is the right place for me because _and I am right for Brown because . Again. Get the apps in. Get your rec’s done. Keep getting great grades. Don’t use this as an excuse for failure but as an opportunity to improve your chances.

Another “again”. It is not necessary to go to Brown for pre-med. There are hundreds of schools for you with a 3.7 and an excellent high school record.

thank you so much, curmudgeon. I can’t wait to get out of there. And yes, i’m planning on applying to other places too - for now, i have vanderbilt (51% acceptance rate, anyone?) . Brown looks so amazing though, I really want in but it’ll be my only ivy.

mom2collegekids - there’s a lot more to being a pre-med than the pre-reqs.

with the highest mean gpa of the Ivies, Brown is a GREAT pre-anything college.

Brown does not calculate GPAs nor they appear in the official transcript. A rigorous course load, a flexible curriculum plus the access to amazing opportunities with internships, ECs, research plus an awesome student body are what makes Brown GREAT.

Brown is to undergraduate education what Yale is to medical education. ;)

^^^ What do you mean they don’t calculate gpa’s. What about pre-professional kids, do they not have a gpa to apply with?

Those who “need” a GPA must calculate it themselves. The transcript does not calculate it either (it just shows your courses and your grades). Brown did away with GPAs many years ago as part of their Open Curriculum. I find it interesting that even with all the talk about “grade inflation”, Brown is one of the top “feeders” to elite graduate programs in law, medicine and business. (There is even the now legendary case of a Brown student who took all his courses Pass/Fail and was accepted to Harvard Med)

Anyway, I don’t mean to hijack the thread. To the OP, just like curm said, if your school is having such problems - transfer to ANY other school.

While Brown may not print a gpa on a transcript, doesn’t it have to calculate a gpa for everyone because its participates in NCAA sports?

Of course, Brown has no trouble reporting a calculation for its law school applicants:

What school are you going to that might be closing?
