@luciagrande I contacted them through interviewing@brown.edu
@gracie21 thank you so so much!
@luciagrande You simply have to know that applicants outnumber interviewers. I interview for another Ivy. 32% of our areaās applicants were not assigned. Those that were, for the most part, were assigned randomly. Thatās just how the numbers bear out.
lucia, I hope you read what I wrote to gracie, because if you did, you wouldnāt be āvery worried about this.ā Take all necessary steps to get interviewed, but please donāt stress out about this. Describing the interview as your āone shotā is giving it much too much weight.
@gracie21 Iām sorry you got a lazy alum. Good for you for being proactive, and I hope someone contacts you soon!
@fireandrain hello! Iām an international student who is currently studying in the United States and I have applied to Brown for RD! I have a question about mid-year report: how do you think the admission officers would consider the senior mid year report? Do they see the grades along with other application during the admission process? My grades did not change dramatically but the grades donāt look that good compare to the other grades that Iāve received previous years. Thank you so much in advance
@freshlemon123 Since Iām not an admissions officer, I canāt answer your question. Iām sure your mid-year report is viewed along with everything else in your application ā if they ask to see it, then of course they are going to look at it.
Is there anyone who has not been reached by an alum and has contacted the admission office about this situation (I mean, will they just reply every question about not getting an interview with ākeep patientāā¦)?
Let me assure you that Brown is pulling out all the stops to get students interviewed. Like, frequent email requests looking for more volunteers. Frequent emails to those ālazyā alums. I know that in my area, despite all our nagging, there are still some students who have not been contacted. Weāre working on it, I promise you!
For example, I was unable to commit to doing interviews this year and I have received 4 emails about it over the last couple months asking me to reconsider and do some.
If I havenāt gotten an interview request yet, should I give up hope?
I just got a 5th email request stating that they were still having trouble getting interviewers for everyone. You may not get one at this point but it has nothing to do with your chances of admission.
The phrase āgive up hopeā is much more drastic than this situation warrants.
You need to call admissions, which weāve said numerous times. Brown is committed to interviewing 100% of applicants. Obviously there are times when it canāt achieve perfection but we try. There is still, plenty of time to arrange an interview. Iāll probably volunteer to do a couple more.
Thank you @fireandrain ! Your information about the Brown interview helped me a lot and eased many of my anxieties. I had my interview today and for all of you who are nervous there is no need! Go into it thinking about it as a conversation about Brown and you will do great. I tend to be a more reserved person but I warmed up to my interviewer and we had a great conversation about Brown and many other topics. Good luck to all other applicants!
I just got a request for an alumni interview today. Wasnāt the deadline for reports on Feb. 15?
It was extended
If you never got contacted by an interviewer and have not had an interview, I would not sweat it. This was an unusual year re a larger number of applicants, and maybe fewer interviewers. I know that there are some areas where only as little as 30% of the students were interviewed, and some other areas where 100% were. Does that mean that in areas where less than 100% of students were contacted, that only the top candidates got interviews? Absolutely not! Actually itās more like luck of the draw. As far as I know, all the extended deadlines for interviews to be set up have passed. (In fact I think that all the contact reports are supposed to be in by now.) I guess if you really wanted an interview, and were never contacted, you could still reach the admissions office and they may be able to reach an alumnus to interview you. (I know in my area we would find someone, even if it was to just talk, and it might not be an āofficialā interview to go back to Brown.) I know for some students I interview, the interview is really their only insight (for reasons of distance or other exposure/educational lack of resources etc.) into what Brown is really like.
I had my interview last night. Is it too late for reports to be sent in even with the extended deadline?
For those of you who will be going through the interview process next year, I wanted to leave you with a few important questions I had to answer at my interview:
Why Brown? My interviewer asked me this after asking me about some other schools I was looking at (I mentioned Columbia as my other top choice) and what made my answer effective was that I could explain that, even though their curriculum philosophy are polar opposites, the passion and activism on campus makes them two sides of the same coin.
If you could make one class required for all Brown students, what would it be and why?
What is your passion and what is the motivation for your passion? What/who pushes you to do the things you do?
Future Brown applicants, reflect on these questionsātheyāre valuable not only for the interview but also for the admissions process as a whole!
I totally understand why your interviewer would ask this and I think the question of āwhat topic do you think is critical for people to know, regardless of their interestā is a good one in terms of learning about you, but to frame it in the context of creating a curricular requirement based on your own principles at a school that prides itself on doing exactly *the opposite * of that makes me cringe. Even though Iām sure he/she had 0 expectation that you would point out that contradiction I canāt imagine being asked that and not saying something to that effect.
