Hey guys, I got accepted into Brown RD, but I am not ecstatic about the FA offer. Has anyone had experience with Brown matching non-Ivy FA offers, particularly WashU, or maybe Duke, UMich, or Emory.
Brown won’t match merit awards. If your packages are financial aid only, it’s worth trying. You’ve got nothing to lose.
I have the same question actually. I’m trying to get Brown to match my Amherst or Carleton package (which was the highest by far) but my parents don’t really know how to appeal. Any pointers on how to do it? They are specifically wondering if they should start asap or wait and do it in person at ADOCH.
Call Financial Aid and ask what to do.
Call the office of financial aid. I would say don’t wait until ADOCH; they might be more generous earlier on. I’ve heard a lot of success stories about appealing, so definitely worth a shot.
Also trying to get a match, hopefully they don’t have a policy about only matching other Ivies. Getting a little nervous they may be less generous than other schools, maybe b/c of the size of their endowment, dunno. For ADOCH and equivalent a lot of schools offer to fly out students on need-based grants (I don’t know if it has to be over a certain dollar amount) but I see nothing about travel funds for ADOCH for grant recipients. Uh oh.
@CalDreamin I recieved a travel grant from Brown yesterday
@CrabCakes735 wow that is great! We didn’t get one though, maybe we were below a cut off. Did you just get an email about it?
@CalDreamin yeah I got the email yesterday, but it’s 3 days of school I am going to miss
Yesterday I uploaded two need-based offers from LAC’s (not Ivies) to my DS’s Brown financial aid portal. I saved the offers as PDF’s & made sure the size of the files was not too large (one had to be re-scanned in black & white to meet the size requirements). Now his FA portal lists an appeal in the list of documents and it says “pending” next to it. I also called the FA office & they said we may be contacted for additional info, and once they have all the info they need it will take 5-7 business days to process the appeal. Fingers crossed! (Very discrepant need-based packages from the LAC’s vs. Brown).
@262mom I uploaded a financial aid letter too and mine also sends pending. Hopefully they match the offer
Let us know if Brown improves your packages because my parents are currently trying the same thing and want to know the best way to appeal!
@262mom @ricka8 Brown improved my aid package. They didn’t match it completely, but it still improved significantly
Great news, @CrabCakes735 ! Thanks for letting us know.
