Brown means fun yet not as much preparation for graduate schools?

HELLLLLLLLLP!
I am having very difficult time trying to decide among Brown, Duke, and Dartmouth and it seems that Duke and Dartmouth are much successful in sending their students into prominent professional schools (i.e., Yale Law).

I have heard from many that if you really want to focus on your study and grad school, it is best to go to Dartmouth (since all you can there is basically study) or Duke (still very lil things to do around there), whereas Brown relatively has much more city life available (close to Boston and NYC) and students are much more laid-back in studying due to its grade inflation (there is almost no grade inflation in Duke).

So far, I concluded that going to Brown means more things to experince around the cities, and more fun vs. Duke means more concentration in studying and going to grad school.

Im ambivalent, since I really want to enjoy four years with lots of experinces yet still care a LOT about getting into named grad school.

Are all my assumptions about Brown true???
Deadline for common reply date draws NEAR everyday!!!

erm, i HOPE thats not the case! i honestly believe that how prepared you will be for grad school depends entirely on the decisions that you make personally while at school. at brown, you can be incredibly successful academically and easily build an impressive resume. i think brown's name is in no way inferior to duke or darmouth. and, the big pro is that you have the option to chill out and have fun if you so choose. i'm not a current student (still deciding like you), but this is my perception of the whole situation. good luck!

zz,

Dartmouth and Duke are incredibly fun schools. Most of the "fun" that happens at colleges occurs on campus not out in the city. You'll never get bored at Dartmouth, there is always a flurry of activity on the weekends and some weekdays. All your choices are excellent for grad placement, that shouldn't be an issue.

To think that you can't get into a fantastic named grad school from any of these places is to be completely naive. The bottomline is, you go where you feely ou will be most successful, whatever the reason may be for that. For me, Brown's open curriculum and openness for exploration is crucial to my enjoying college and learning best.

I also heard that a lot of grads still deem open curriculum with a negative light ;(

They're probably just jealous ;)

Brown students fair extremely well when applying to grad schools. Most of the rumors about that is purely speculation by those not involved in the system and most of that criticism was around in the late 80s and no longer exists. At taht time, when Vartan Gregorian was president, there was a lot of backlash from outside on the open curriculum and he spent a lot of time defending it. THis, however, has not been the case for quite some time.

many grad schools and employers see the open curriculum as an asset...it just depends on how you use it. it is much more impressive to have succeeded with a rigorous courseload of your choosing than to do well with one that is prescribed to you

Is it just me, or has CC created this weird dynamic of seriously over analyzing the process of picking a college?

CC hasn't created this, overanxious students and crazy parents has, as well as a shifting attitude towards education.

However, it's still ridiculous.

some kids IM me and ask things like "is brown as prestigious as duke? like, if i pick brown, will harvard medical school think that i should have gone to duke because duke is ranked higher?". I think that if it weren't for the crazy obsession some parents have spread over CC about "the PERFECT fit", kids like this who stumble upon the site would have just visited and picked whatever their gut told them to

This is one of the stupidest threads I've read recently. Look dooder, Brown, Dartmouth and Duke are all excellent schools that have excellent intake of talent and produce excellent graduates. You will go as far as you want to out of any of the three. At this point, you should pick the one you'd be happiest at...and if you have the urge to analyze it any further, I'd suggest killing a 12'er of bud light and thinking about what's important in life. Hope this helps!

^^^LMAO ! (The OP started same thread in a Duke forum )

Lol cavalier exactly. I want to tell these kids "you got into the best schools in the country! Enjoy the luxury and relish the fact that you have the choice in picking the top school where you'll have the most fun."

The idea that Brown fails to get people into grad school is totally unfounded.

Two stats from Brown's website:

Brown consistently ranks among the top five colleges in the nation in the percentage of its applicants accepted to medical school, and these impressive records are similar in other areas of graduate study.

Of those who apply to law school, 92 to 95 percent are accepted to one of their top three choices; among business school applicants, the figure is nearly 100 percent.

And the students are going to incredibly good school. I have one friend going to Columbia J-School next year, another to U Chicago for Law. If you put in the effort, you'll have results.

Oh yes and its ok to go to a school where youll go out and experience the world. The best education I've had has been working with minority populations in the city and exploring the politics/court systems.
Plus we have Buddy;)

Your assumptions about Brown are completely unfounded. There is grade inflation at a lot of places. People here study very hard and the classes are very hard. They also know how to have a good time...the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Georgetown is the most common destination for aspiring Brown lawyers. I think that's a pretty good placement myself.

^^ One of my senior friends is going to Georgetown law next year!! (I'm very excited for her.) She also got into Berkeley (Boalt Hall) and a few other places. And she also had tons of fun. Brown'll get ya where you want to go if you give it a chance.
