Eventhough Harvard had a record number of applications for 2007, Brown’s admissions rate is 7.82% vs Harvard’s 9.0%. This shows how competitive and desirable Brown has become !!!

Where did you get that information?

Harvard's website states that their acceptance rate was 9.0% for this year with a record of almost 22 900 applications for the year. Brown's applications were more than 19 000 this year for a total acceptance of 1485 for a rate of 7.82%.!!

Some anecdotal evidence to support what MovieBuff indicated: my DD was accepted at HYPS, but wait-listed at Brown!

Isn't the class size 1485? I assume Brown would accept more people than that under the assumption that some would choose to attend other schools.

brown's class size is about 1500, not its admit size... thats more like 2500.

so i think the math is right but you're looking at the wrong data.

The data is exactly the same that Harvard is using for their published 9.0% rate. Therefore it is safe to assume that the percentages of 9.0% for Harvard vs 7.82% for Brown can be compared.

Not really.
Because Harvard has much higher yield rate than Brown. Anyway, you would have to take into account ED and stuffs.

Harvard is claiming a record LOW acceptance rate of 9.0% on the basis of 2258 accepted and 22 955 applications for a 8.96% ( which they are rounding up to 9.0%.)

i dont think brown took in ED for what they sent with their letter of acceptance. Penn is the same way - they say the the class size will be 2400. The total number of apps = 23000. so that means they must accept b/w 3500-4000 ppl to have a rate of around 20%

the 9% from harvard looks like the normal acceptance rate (EA + RD)

anyway theyre all good schools :-) lol...accepted into Brown and Penn so I'm happy

^^^ Way off.... Just because u do not think..... Brown DID include their ED in the total numbers. I agree that the 9% for Harvard looks the same as previous years though. Anyway, my anxiety about Brown ( correct with those numbers ) was justified.....but I am so happy now!!! See you all at Brown soon!!

I still do not believe that Brown's admission rate is going to be lower than Harvard. I am sorry but I would still have to see some figures.

Profanity..Just look at the figures!!!! ( and if you do not believe me look at the website ) I think that attitude is the one that perpetuates the myth about Harvard!! But at the end, who cares???? I am going to Brown!!!! Yeaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Movie, Brown accepts about 2700 for a class of 1485 (not everyone who gets in goes!). So that equates to about 13% give or take. Last year Brown accepted 13.7%, this year with applications up about 3.8% the overall rate will be a little over 13%.

Do you understand the concept of yield? You dont take class size/total applications instead you have to take the number accepted/total apps. Very different things.

It's possible it's lower or close, but Brown's acceptance rate is not class size divided by number of apps. As others have said, due to yield, I think the typical "admit class" is like 2500 students to create a class of just less than 1500. This would mean 2500 or so divided by number of apps is the acceptance rate, that's how everyone calculates it and so that's how Harvard's was calculated.

We'll see the official numbers soon, they're normally posted soon after the actual admissions go up.

Congrats to those who got in!

ok...so by your logic Penn would have an acceptance rate of about 10%...which is like half that of last years - a dramatic decrease from the norm. Same with brown, how are they gonna go from 15% to 7% acceptance rate in one year, think about it...you're not being logical.

Just because u do not think

suppose to mean

I totally understand the concept of yield, but the same applies to Harvard. Harvards numbers are also comparing class size and number of apps ( not number of accpetances..) Apples to apples. They did not release the other number, therefore that comparison is not possible ...yet!!!

shramleon...it means just that. Just because U do not think it, it does not mean is true...Did u ever participate in an official debate?

This year's acceptance rates:
1. Columbia 8.9%
2. Harvard 9.3%
3. Yale
4. Princeton
5. Stanford
6. MIT
7. Brown
8. Dartmouth

S Snack, while that list looks reasonable, where are you getting that from since it's clear that 3-8 don't have actual numbers out yet?

Also-- who the ***** cares about admit rates! Go where you belong and be happy there!
