Brown or CMU

Accepted in both. Which one has the strong EE or Math and Physics program ?
Thanks.

Hi. My daughter was accepted to CMU and Brown. She is now a freshman at Brown.
Academics are great at both schools. (I went to CMU many years ago!) A good friend of my daughter’s is in CMU’s CS program.

Here’s my thought:

  • We liked that CMU’s Mellon College of Sciences was dedicated to Math/Science…so, someone who isn’t CS or Engineering had an academic home. That was truly nice. But, it seemed that, if you changed your mind about what you wanted to major in, it would be more difficult to change homes. (For example, if you decided you wanted to study CS, I don’t think you could make that change easily at CMU.)
  • Brown seems like a happier, more-mentally-healthy environment. It’s still rigorous…but, seems less oppressive!
  • You can entertain/explore different majors at Brown, easily. She was debating between Math, Physics and CS. She took courses in all 3 areas. She now is exploring Applied Math and Physics.
  • All these schools have smart kids. The environments are different.
  • One more factor: Brown has fewer grad students than CMU…so, Professors offer research opportunities to Brown Undergrads easily. She had a research-at-Brown set up for this summer…then, a different research internship at another University came along, so she chose to do that instead. It was nice to see how easy it was to get a summer research opportunity.

I’m happy she chose Brown. (and I’m a CMU alum!)
