Brown or Georgetown

Okay, so I was accepted to Georgetown, Brown, and BC Honors, but I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to Georgetown/Brown.

I’ll be studying Applied Mathematics next year, which Brown is certainly stronger in. Brown is probably stronger academically overall, and also has no education requirements, so I can take pretty much whatever I want (Georgetown has certain requirements in theology, social sciences, etc). Brown also has engineering, which would be nice to take a few courses in in case I decide to go into an engineering graduate program.

I really felt more comfortable on Georgetown’s campus - the people were more like me. The gap in education is certainly not too large, and I feel like Georgetown’s connections to DC will let me see a lot of the ways my degree could be used. I also feel like I’d meet a lot better connections and have a lot more doors open in the DC area. I would really love to go to a school with as good of a basketball program as Georgetown. Oh, and the women are much better looking at Georgetown.

So you, Brown message board browsers, why should I go to Brown? Anything I forgot or you disagree with? Thanks!

That was my final decision, too! It was tough, but as I've written on this board in other places, I'm so glad I chose to come to Brown. Now that I'm here, I know for sure that I made the right choice.

But that doesn't mean that my choice would be right for you.

I was interested that you said that the people at Georgetown were more like you and that you felt more comfortable there. That was the opposite of my experience -- I found that Brown was just a better fit for my personality and I clicked better with the people. For me, this was a pretty strong reason to come to Brown, despite all of the opportunities that DC would offer me.

But here's what I figured in the end... DC will still be there when I graduate, but the opportunity to be an undergrad at Brown will not. If you're considering grad school, or a career in DC, you can definitely go to Georgetown or DC after Brown, but being a Brown undergrad is an incredible experience that you'll never have again.

From my perspective, sports isn't too important, and wouldn't factor into my decision (but if the basketball thing is a big deal for you, maybe it'll factor into yours). Also, the women at Brown are gorgeous... so I wouldn't worry about that either way.

It looks like the major things you're considering are:
You may have a better academic experience at Brown.
You may have a better social and career-related experience at Georgetown.

There's no one who can answer the question of which of those is more important, or whether the gap in either aspect is even big enough to make a difference. However, I will tell you that you will "meet a lot of connections" and "have a lot of doors opened" at Brown, too. And if you're a friendly, outgoing person, you'll find plenty of people you like here, even if they're not all like you.

There's no right answer here, but if you'd like to know more about why I'm glad I chose Brown over Georgetown, I'd be happy to answer any questions. Good luck with your decision, and congrats on your admissions!

Actually, I've heard Georgetown grad is a lot better than its undergrad - and I've heard the opposite is true for Brown.

not sure if that helps any, but like the person above said, DC is always gonna be there, but being an undergrad at Brown is something that won't be.
