Brown or Yale?

Both seem more chilled out than the rest of the Ivy League. So what’s the real difference here?

You ARE posting this in the Brown forum, you know ;)
Simply put, Brown is better, if better to you means:
-no curriculum restrictions
-a safer, better city (mmhmm)
-more diverse population (though Yale is also quite diverse)

Plus, erm, they're different schools. But you knew that...

Yale? chilled like Brown? Brown is way more chill. We invented chill. So chillax.

don't post here if you want non-biased opinions. I would post on admissions or parents forum

Wow, that subject line feels like an extension of the 'or' game. And if we are to follow that principle: Brown!

Well it essentially comes down to

Providence/New Haven
No Distribution Reqs/DRs
6,000 Total Students/15,000+ Total Students (Yale has many more graduate schools and programs -- But, their college size is slightly smaller than Brown's)
Residential Colleges/Theme or Traditional housing
- Both have huge theater/drama scenes -- Yale's may be larger
- The Endowment difference, Yale is far richer but how well and much of that money is spent I'm not sure.

I got the sense that Brownies (or the school) seem to enjoy and employ a more balanced approach to the college experience than did Yale but that's only my opinion. Most people at both are tremendously happy, so odds are quite good for a person at either place.

Popular culture used to be of the opinion that Yale was a gentlemanly type club from the characterizations of Montgomery Burns and F. Scott Fitzgerald. I know people who were tremendously happy with their experience at both

as a visitor of both....

i found yales campus to be nicer... the buildings were amazing

the area around brown is better

i noticed the Yale kids seemed to be very preppy... now i know this isn' neccessarily a bad thing nor is it true of the whole student body... Brown seemd to be more artsy.... maybe because of risde

the actual schools are very different.... i applied ED to brown.... mostly because i thought i had a shot at getting in... but there is no denying the fact that a yale degree is more prestigous than a brown degree... individual majors and fields will differ but im am talking in general

also the layed back attitude you talk of is Brown... yale is definetly more compettitive... especially since Brown has the P/F option...

You truly cant go wrong with either and i would be very happy to go to either.

The people you'll be showing your resume to will know that at the Ivy level, the schools are comparable and a Yale degree means no more than a Brown degree. If you want to impress the uninformed, then go Yale, but anybody worth speaking to will recognize the equal prestige of degrees from both schools (for undergrad at least). For graduate school, it's a totally different story.

well, of course. i applied ED to brown, but i wouldn't even dream of going to brown grad school. (as a matter of fact, my first choice for grad school is... ::gasp:: columbia! but that's because they have a journalism school and they're in new york.)

brown is about the undergraduate experience. it has one of the larger undergraduate divisions of any ivy, but also one of the smallest graduate programs, and definitely the smallest proportion.

I'm a Brown freshman and I think that Brown is the best place to be! I wasn't very fond of Yale when I was thinking about where to apply. I felt that the residential college system would hinder my ability to meet the other students at Yale. And as many said above, if it's the name you're looking for, go to Yale. I turned down Stanford to come to Brown and I think it was a great decision. Nothing can compare to a Brown experience.

I chose Brown over Yale because I wanted more freedom to take the classes I valued most. Honestly, I'm not sure if it was the right decision but it worked out very well for me in the end. I had an awesome experience at Brown and got to do amazing things.
