Are there any locations on campus for parents to stay overnight in? Or do they have to find a hotel around the area? Thanks in advance!

Hotel.

ten char

While they do need to stay in a hotel, I truly do not believe parents stay for the orientation (the week before classes begin). Most do as we did.....move their child into the dorm on the move-in day and leave. We stayed in a hotel the night before the move and that was all. The orientation is for the students only.

That's a good point, I didn't even really catch the Orientation thing. Mom and pops should probably head out move in day or the next day, depending on how difficult the travel is.

Last year, many kids moved in on Saturday and orientation started on Sunday. There were several workshops for parents on Sunday. So staying over Saturday night is definitely an option for parents, and many parents were there.

Brown does not supply housing for parents on that Saturday, so you'll have to find your own hotel. There isn't much that is within walking distance of the campus, although there are a few B&Bs and Brown has an inn on campus. One thing to consider is staying in Seekonk, Mass., where there are a ton of stores you may be visiting to buy things for your kid -- there's Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

We are driving from Michigan and will be arriving on Friday evening and are leaving on Sunday afternoon/evening following the parent activities. We will be staying at the Radisson Providence Harbor, which is within walking distance of campus. I used priceline so the nightly rate was $45. We have stayed there before (also using Priceline) and were happy with the hotel.

A reminder that President Ruth Simmons is giving a welcome address on Sunday at 2:00 and parents are invited.

President Simmons' address is very cool! At the end of it last year it was time to say good-bye and I will never forget it. She said, more or less, OK, folks it's time to say good-bye. So we were up and out-- surgical and clean and practiced. And off we went, and off she went and it was very moving in many ways!

franglish (or anyone else), when do the frosh do their ceremonial walk through the gates? Is that during orientation?

it's during convocation, which is on the first day of class if I recall

september 3

And, parents are not around to see that, because they are long gone! Sniff Sniff...

Yeah, I had the impression that that would be durring orientation too, cuz it seemed like something intended for parrents to take pics, etc. Oh well, I guess not. Also why would it be in the middle of the day on the first day of class? That seems like an awkward time, no?

Just wanted to add my two cents but the Radisson is not that close-its a long walk away. They do offer a free shuttle bus which we have used and the driver even comes and picks you up. Since parking around campus is a problem, this came in very handy. For others there is also several hotels in Seekonk, Ma-prob a 5-7 min drive from campus. We have stayed at the Ramada, Comfort Suites or Hampton Inn. After all, you are only sleeping there, so I wasn't looking for alot of amenities. There is also a Target, Staples, Walmart,Bed,Bath and Beyond etc. right on the same street with these hotels so it was very convenient for shopping/picking up last minute things.

It's not a parents event, it's a Brown acculturating event meant for students and for community members. Day one, here's the start to being a Brown student, enter the Gates.

It's done at noon because hardly any classes are schedule in that hour.
