I'm at brown and I want to have a car at UVA (i'm 2nd year transfer)... I sent an email into the parking people asking them how I get one but they never replied.... so anyone on here know?

You're not going to be able to park at Brown. You're probably going to have to park at the football stadium.

Yeah it's no surprise you didn't get a response- I never did either. You can try calling them, but you will probably not get very helpful responses (they told me things about what parking permits I could buy contrary to what I could actually get- and weren't very nice about it)

well i read the website and it said brown students get S permits but doesn't say how

you buy the s-permits from them, I think you can buy S permits on the website. With such a permit you can pack at the football stadium or u-hall. Living in brown there is no parking close at all.

do most people have cars starting their 2nd year at uva?? ive been told that if you live on grounds (esp brown, which is in the middle of everything) that you dont really need a car.

Well the only on-grounds housing close to classes is Brown and the Lawn. The other upperclassmen housing are far enough to consider driving and taking a bus. Living in Faulkner kind of prevents me from walking to class 15 minutes before it begins.

i want a car so i can go places off campus...

Well there's nothing here at Charlottesville but Richmond is within a hour drive.

You probably not be wanting to head out to Richmond all too often.

UVAMalex09, the on-grounds housing for upperclassmen (minus lambeth and bice) may be far enough away to take the bus, but students don't qualify for any permits that would make driving any closer.

Gubba, you should check out the bus system in charlottesville, UVA students can ride the charlottesville buses for free. Parking prices keep going upp so it may be worthwhile to leave it at home unless you really need it.

Funny, then can you explain why every upperclassman engineering student I know seems to be able park in the E-school parking lot? Granted, it is limited parking but it's there.

Well UVAMalex, if you're referring to parking after business hours then anyone can park there. That parking is limited during the day and if you're living on-grounds, as you said in the post, then you can only purchase some variation of the S permit, which doesn't allow you to park anywhere near the e-school lot.

Generally those times are M-F 7-5 when permits are required (and maybe football game days)

Well, I guess I was mistaken, but I do know some people who do work at the school so I misconstrued that.

Well I appreciate the alternative suggestions.... but my parents want me to have my car up there (plus they payin for any permit i need) and I plan on going to visit some people at other colleges while I'm at UVA. So the questions isn't ... "should I have a permit?" But more of, "how do I get a permit?"

Go to the P&T office?
