***Brown PLME Class of 2020 Discussion***

for those applying to Brown PLME- ask questions, post stats, or have general discussion about PLME Here

They want to make sure that you are committed to medical. So relevant EC may play a big role.

ill be applying rd - 2330 sat, 3.75 uw gpa, around 200 hours of medical volunteering, i hope thats enough… i believe the critical part is writing a strong essay

You can search the old acceptance threads for PLME acceptances. Here are the general ED and RD threads from last year:

** ED PLME applications fall by 40%**

http://www.browndailyherald.com/2015/11/12/ed-plme-applications-fall-by-40-percent/

“The policy was changed to simplify the early decision application because “a number of applicants were confused about the option and were not sure what they were committing to,” Miller wrote in an email to The Herald. He added that while the drop in early applications was anticipated, the University expects the number of PLME applicants to increase in the regular decision pool”.

This is a bogus assumption. Obviously, PLMe applicants are very clear about their commitment.

Brown should reverse course. This is detrimental to PLME, and Brown. Many students gave up the chance of HYPSM for PLME, not for Brown. In RD, these students may already have committed to other schools.

“Many students gave up the chance of HYPSM for PLME, not for Brown.”

And that’s exactly why Brown changed the policy. Brown wants students who want to go to Brown. PLME is secondary. If a student is only applying because of PLME, then they are not a good fit and they are better off at HYPSM.

I’m sure Brown will survive under this new policy, even if it means the acceptance rate for PLME goes up a smidgen because of fewer applicants.

I agree with @fireandrain. Applying to Brown PLME just because you want to have a guaranteed spot in medical school is a bad decision that some students were still making. The application is always first and foremost an application to Brown, and secondarily an application to PLME.

The admissions team will look at our application to Brown University first, correct? I assume WITHOUT considering the supplemental PLME essays, which are only considered for the program?

Correct. If and only if they choose to accept you to Brown will they look at your PLME application.

Being a graduate of Brown PLME and now interviewing students for admission, I know one of the important characteristic is having ability to succeed in an academically challenging and stimulating environment. Being able to take advantage of what Brown has to offer and utilize the resource to change the world for the better is next on the list. If these are satisfied, then admission to Brown is strongly considered.

Once the student has been admitted to Brown, then the application is reviewed by PLME admission reviewers. The PLME does not spend time reviewing application of someone who does not even gain admission to Brown in the first place. So the application has to be compatible with both Brown undergraduate as well as med school.

For PLME consideration, interest/reason for medicine becomes important. I agree that PLME is not looking for candidates who is only focused on medicine and not Brown. For those who cares about the reputation/ranking of HYPMS, the real focus of Brown PLME education is lost on them. The program is about opening up opportunity to pursue passion in and outside of medical fields, not merely to achieve stamp of approval by ranking. By taking the pressure off college performance and medical school applications, the PLME student can try something outside of their comfort zone as well as diving in deep to pursue their interests without fear of appearing not-medical school compatible.

PLME candidates are discouraged to use Brown medical school as safety, and would have to give up medical school spot to regular applicants if student decides to apply out. The most successful PLME student is someone who is able to utilize the academic and extracurricular freedom to pursue their passion without worrying about medical school application process.

As for whether SAT of 2200 is sufficient, I would say that score is compatible with academic success at Brown, or HYPMS, no significantly different than getting 2350. So my advice is focusing on articulating how you would benefit from an environment like Brown, and how others at Brown can benefit from having you in its community.

(Disclosure-personal opinion above, not official Brown statement. I am a graduate of Brown PLME, Harvard Public Health, and faculty at Stanford Medical School.)

Can someone on this post chance me for Brown PLME? I’m applying RD

Guess I should explain that Hands Across the World is a group of doctors and nurses that visits Ecuador annually to provide free surgeries to underserved indigenous populations. In addition to this, I have volunteered at a neuroscience lab for the last few months (over 150 hours so far, i’ve helped with research on memory and aging in the hippocampus and stuff with estrogen receptors), also a co-author of a UF Research Paper on Demonstration of high-performance cryogenic probe arms for deployable IFUs

My impression: Very good profile with better chance than the average 3-4% PLME admission rate. You will have a great chance wherever you apply, and as a Brown alum, I hope you can take your enthusiasm for engagement to Brown Med and make a great impact. Good luck!

Could someone chance me too?

What kind of student is Brown looking for? Like what should we write about in the essays?

Sorry I forgot to mention by 4A*s I meant I’m doing the British A level system

I read that if you took the ACT you do not have to submit subject tests. Does not submitting the subject tests ruin any shot?

you’re good to go if you took the ACT w/ writing. A couple of people have gotten in (you can see on past threads) w/o submitting subject scores. good subject scores seem to help though. @sisirox

@jhgong Hm. Funny. I remember you from a forum about the City of Hope internship. I got ED to Brown PLME and had pretty similar stats. I’d say you definitely have a good chance.

Really focus on the essays. Oh dear god the essays.
