Brown PLME Early Decision Chance? From TheChance!

Hi everyone, I happened to be one of those 500 or so applicants to Brown PLME ED this year, so my chances are already low as is, and I'm not too expectant on an acceptance, but I thought I'd discuss this anyways.

Here was my application:

Demographics:

Location: Midwest
Race: Asian
Gender: Male

Academics:

GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.31 Weighted [so far]
Class rank: 2/577

5 credits = semester class

Senior Class Schedule:

IB English HL, IB TOK II, IB Physics HL, IB Chemistry HL, IB Biology HL, IB Math HL, IB Spanish SL, and AP Language Composition

Just as a note, all of those HL class listings are two year courses, so I went through HL I my junior year, and am going through HL II this [senior] year. Thus, the 4.0 was maintained through these HL courses my junior year as well.

Furthermore, only IB and AP classes are given weights of 5.0 in our school GPA system, not honors or advanced courses.

ACT: 34 + 12 writing
SAT: 2270

AP Stats: 5
AP Human Geo: 5
AP Chem: 4
IB Psych SL: 7
IB Math SL: 7

5 Hours of so participating in a local trauma center health day activity

[of those activites mentioned, all buth the trauma center and shadowing went on my main commonapp activities list, with the rest following in the additional information section. I made sure to outline and describe each activity, along with my contribution, in the additional information section as well]

A few math competition placements as well

[not too much as you can see :(]

Essay:

1) Discussed introduction to medicine via volunteering opportunities, and how that impacted my decision to go into medicine, and how I was awed by the humanity portrayed by doctors [ very meaningful for me ]. Furthermore, I discussed the enriching experience I'd have as an undergrad with a direct acceptance to Alpert Med School

2) Discussed my heavy interested in science, but desire to explore both the humanities and writing courses in order to better both my research abilities and understanding of humans/ethics, which would ultiamtely better my understading of patients in the future, and how such freedome yet rigor is exclusive to brown.

Letters of Rec:

All 3 were hopefully good

1) Math Teacher
2) Biology Teacher [and Extended Essay supervisor ]
3) Cancer Lab Research Head [ sent by himself directly to Brown, not through commonapp]

Interview: Went alright I guess, guy told me he would mention some nice things and stress my future service goals following earning me M.D.

As you can see, I tried hard, but I am not very confident. VERY impressive people applying this year ED, and its a bit overwhelming.

What do you guys think my chances are? Even a deffered would be nice :)

Oh yeah, for those that were wondering, I am an IB Diploma candidate as well as a candidate for a 7th and 8th certificate.

7th Certificate = IB Physics HL
8th Certificate = IB Math HL

Furthermore, my Extended Essay was on the new M.S. Treatment option, the “Liberation Procedure” and its underlying CCSVI issue. I did not mention this in my application directly, but my biology teacher recommendation should have mentioned it.

I dunno if that helps much though :/

Last BUMP for the day. Sorry guys if this is obnoxious, but like many others here, I’m very anxious, and would just like to see some people throw up some ideas!

Thanks in advance for looking/posting!

I think you have an alright chance, but it’s somewhat of a crap shot for everyone at such competitive universities. Good luck!

Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1246909-chances-cal-poly-ed-engineering-major.html</a></p>

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it is somewhat of a crapshoot, but it’s a dream!

And i’ll chance ASAP

Any one can help me this, very appreciate.
Does Brown accept the “extra rec. letter in addition to two teachers’?”
Is it too late I mail it out over night today?

Well, my cancer lab research head sent in a letter of recommendation via fax and a hard copy in the mail on his own accord. After he informed me of this, he did tell me that Brown sent him two e-mails back acknowledging that they had recieved both the fax and the hard copy, which were placed in my file upon recieving it. He sent the letter and faxed it 3 days BEFORE the early decision deadline though.

You could definitely try I guess!

Also, we’re in the same Applicant pool! What do you think my chances are?!

:)

I believe you can get in. Congratulations in advance

You certainly have a shot. Most kids I’ve seen get into PLME have 800 or darn close math SAT I and II, you don’t give us your breakdown.

Waverly
Do you know why break down the SAT I is important

Because writing is not important. High math is a must, high CR really helps. So the best case here would be something close to 800/800/670.

waverly
do you or any friends in plme now? do you know the stats? what is the most important?

Thank you

Well, since PLME only requires an ACT + writing or SAT I with 2 subject tests, I only sent in the ACT with my primary app. I took the SAT for the first time in october, so I sent the SAT results later on after I sent in my primary app.

ACT Math = 36
SAT Math = 720 (wut?)

So yeah, kind of a weird spread unfortunately. I am not really a math focused guy, but even if they look for that, I hoped that my 7 on math SL and 5 on AP stats, as well as my participation in Math HL, as well as multiple math competition placements would cover for that.

I really flaked on the SAT math section, and I know I should be able to do better. I got an 80 on the PSAT math. Who knows I guess.

Also, thanks for your kind comments WantBrownPLME, but I am not too confident. This is a very competitive program, and I don’t think I demonstrate much of that competitiveness.

Also, waverly, are you sure that Brown focuses on math? I could have sworn that Brown focuses a LOT more on your other interests than straight up maths and whatnot, the nature of the program being what it is…

One of the essay questions even asks what other interests and course interests beyond math and biology one would have.

EDIT: Also, I wouldn’t count out writing scores either, as Brown PLME seems to place some focus on that as well (the essays count a LOT in decisions as well).

But all in all, thanks for all your help guys!

Any more opinions?

Yes, I’m positive Brown focuses on math for PLME. In all honesty, that you took SL math instead of HL is a big red flag. And I’m Hoping AP stats followed AP calc BC. PLME is a math student kind of program. It is highly, highly competitive. The accepted would also ease into HYPSM.

If you really want a 6 year med program, there are several less competitive worth looking at. I’d say the 720 math SAT would be harmful at all. Consider a retake.

Myths about Brown abound! Here are stats for non hyper competitive PLME:<a href=“Undergraduate Admission | Brown University”>Undergraduate Admission | Brown University;

@ Waverly

Actually, I am in Math HL (I just took the SL test for funnzies, but got a 7). Look at my senior schedule for the Math HL listing. Also, AP Stats was taken my sophomore year, during which I got a 5. Beyond that, do note that the score I actually sent to Brown was composed of a 36 on the math section (Remember, I only sent in the ACT + Writing  )

Lastly, please note that my resume sent in also comprised of multiple competitive level math tournament placements, alongside a math teacher recommendation.

The college won’t be seeing the 720 unless they actually consider the SAT that I sent to them late novemberish (which wouldn’t make much sense really, as the ACT will be my decisions factor).

Also, I’d like to think that a science based program also takes a few peaks at the science as well :D

Thanks for the advice though

Chance, this is not exact science, as I said above, you’re certainly in the running. PLME is one of the SUPER competitive programs. I’ve sent 1-3 candidates per year for many recent years.

The few that got in were my rockstars from a school full of stars. They were USAMO or similar, intel, Siemens, top math summer program, intnl chess champion, off the charts students at a high school with a 2100 average SAT. Not the typical Brown admit, the typical HYPSM admit.

Waverly and TheChance

TheChance

When you login to Brown’s web site with your account, did you see that your extra rec. letter was received?

Incredible chances! Good luck! I hope we both get accepted ED!

WantBrown, a chance, but not a good one. Low CR, no stand out EC, no research. This program has extreme competition among Asian candidates. You would have to be the best out of that pool which generally requires winning national level math/science competitions, attending RSI, USAMO, etc.
